Data Acquisition Intern - Summer 2021 - San Mateo, California
At Guidewire, we offer a combination of good working conditions, an excellent market opportunity, a rational and meritocratic company culture, quality software products, and a long history of careful hiring have allowed us to build an enviable work environment.
Our Cyence Risk analytics team is responsible for ingesting external data at internet scale to provide insurers with predictive insight that helps them price risk, make coverage decisions, and optimize their portfolio strategy. You will be working in a team of 10 of data scientists and engineers who seek down non-obvious datasets and apply ML techniques to improve more traditional insurance underwriting processes.
What will I be doing?
Guidewire is offering a 3-month internship in the Cyence team. The internship is designed to give an opportunity to work in a real-world business environment, and to take ownership for a specific data project that has the potential to provide real value to our customers.
You will be seeking out data sets that have the potential to add lift to our underwriting risk models. Your task will be to look at data sources in a particular area, work out how to source and clean the data, and investigate whether the data can add lift to our models.
Example of data sets that you might be looking at would be:
- Population and housing density
- Search engine trends and keyword advertising auctions
- Census datasets
- Government health and demographic data
- Geospatial data
- Commercial data sources such as the Google Places API and various social sites.
- Motivated and mature, ability to work independently on a project and as part of a team.
- Demonstrable knowledge of SQL or comparable query language, Python, and/or data manipulation
- Statistics or math background preferred in penultimate year or final year of study.
Other types of things that we like to cultivate:
- Curiosity based on genuine love of technology and analytics
- Accountability based on an earnest desire to do what is expected without prompting
- Kindness and respect for your fellow teammates.
