Health Analysis Summer 2021 Intern
U.S. News & World Report is seeking a talented Summer Intern to work with the DC-based Health Analysis team (now with a remote work option) to support the expansion of the high-profile 'Best Hospitals' rankings. The Summer Intern will work closely with the Health Data Project Manager and will report to the Chief of Health Analysis. The successful candidate will join the team at a pivotal time to support the development of a new product, which will provide consumers with highly sought-after information to make informed decisions about where to safely and confidently deliver a baby. The Summer Intern will gain experience in initiating communications and fostering relationships with a wide range of clients (hospital stakeholders) and collecting data that will be published for the benefit of healthcare consumers.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Ideal candidates are working toward an undergraduate degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field.
2. Candidates should be outgoing, responsive, and ready to hit the ground running in an external-facing role that involves substantial phone and email communication with healthcare professionals at diverse hospitals across the country. They must be willing to conduct web-based fact-checking and participate in other special projects that support the health team as needed.
3. Ideal candidates are motivated, detail-oriented, and excited about working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
Job Responsibilities
1. The primary responsibilities of the Summer Intern will be to support data collection and data verification for our new project that will evaluate maternity hospitals. They will lend a hand in outreach and follow-up to a substantial number of hospitals (primarily over phone), data collection and documentation, and data validation using publicly available sources. The successful candidate will play a key role in growing our database of maternity measures and engaging stakeholders of hospitals that provide maternity services, which will lay the foundation for our new maternity product.
2. They will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of project and product managers, data analysts, web developers and journalists. They will also have opportunities to interface with hospital administrators and media relations professionals working for hospitals across the country.
3. They will have opportunities to hone their communications skills and develop knowledge of how a journalistic organization collects and uses healthcare data. They may also have opportunities to learn about product development -- including project management systems such as JIRA and client-facing platforms and dashboards.
4. They may participate in other special projects for the health team as requested, including preparation of our 2021 edition of the Best Hospitals Guidebook.
Minimum Requirements:
- Eligible candidates must be one of the following:
- Part-time or full-time students who have completed 24+ credit hours (rising sophomores/juniors/seniors) and are enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university
- Part-time or full-time students enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited college or university
- May 2021 graduate (Summer Interns Only)
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism and maturity in the workplace
- Effective communicator in both written and spoken English
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency in use of MSOffice Suite and Google Docs
- 3.0 GPA or above preferred
Summer Intern Program Description:
- 10 weeks; ideally, starting on Tuesday, June 1 through Friday, August 6
- We expect interns to work 37.5 hours/week, Monday- Friday
- All interns are paid $15/hour
- Internships will likely work remote
