The Market Dynamics team is looking for 3 summer associates for their projects
*Please include a cover letter with your resume describing which project you would like to work on
PATH is an international organization that drives transformative innovation to save lives and improve health, especially among women and children. We accelerate innovation across five platforms-vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, devices, and system and service innovations-that harness our entrepreneurial insight, scientific and public health expertise, and passion for health equity. By mobilizing partners around the world, we take innovation to scale, working alongside countries primarily in Africa and Asia to tackle their greatest health needs. Together, we deliver measurable results that disrupt the cycle of poor health.
PATH’s Market Dynamics work is growing rapidly, and we are seeking summer associates to contribute to specific projects and our team’s broader work at PATH. The Market Dynamics (MD) program works to identify failures in global health markets and overcome them through evidence-based interventions. The MD team uses analytical approaches like market sizing, demand and supply forecasting, cost-of-goods assessment, supplier engagement, and primary market research to better understand and address the root causes of market failures, thereby improving product access. Our market dynamics experts have extensive experience across a range of fields, including public health, business, economics, biotechnology, public policy and advocacy, international relations, and financial services. Collectively, the members of our team have specialized product knowledge spanning many health areas, including malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, pneumonia, neglected tropical diseases, noncommunicable diseases, and maternal and child health.
The MD Summer Associates will work with MD team members to define problems, conduct analyses, and apply findings to address market-related failures in health equity that restrict access to life-saving products and interventions. The MD Summer Associates will be assigned to work on a specific project (responsibilities defined below), and, if time allows, contribute the MD team’s larger role within PATH.
The MD team recognizes that its work can be enhanced by complementary skillsets, and therefore welcomes applicants from a wide range of fields including public health, economics, business, English, communications, engineering, medicine, data or computer science, operations management, and others.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Project 1: Consulting Services business model development PATH’s rapidly growing Market Dynamics program is currently implementing a new business model to contribute to our mission of advancing health equity through innovation and partnerships. More specifically, we are building a consulting practice to pursue short-term global health “consulting-like” projects with funders including foundations, corporations, and multilaterals to broaden our impact and diversify our funding base. In this way, we leverage our existing capabilities to offer expert advice on market assessments, collaborative problem solving and market development. While we have successfully conducted these types of engagements recently, existing business model materials need to be refined and new materials need to be created to help cultivate additional opportunities.
Key activities for the Consulting Services team may include:
• Refine existing pitch materials as necessary
• Prepare company briefings on high priority clients
• Contribute to ideas on publications and speaking opportunities that could help elevate our brand • Create new written content (e.g., case studies blogs or white papers) to showcase our capabilities • Refine revenue projections and provide rationale for different scenarios
• Support the team on other secondary research needs
Project 2: Tools for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (TIMCI)
The TIMCI project is a global effort aiming to accelerate the availability, adoption, and scale-up of tools to identify severe illness and decrease mortality in children in India, Kenya, Myanmar, Senegal, and Tanzania. Among several objectives, TIMCI aims to improve access to pulse oximeters and accelerate the development and market entry of non-invasive multimodal devices – specifically a handheld device that expands the features of standard pulse oximeters with respiratory rate measurement – to manage severe illness at the primary care level in low resource settings.
The selected MD Summer Associate will help the project team with a combination of the following project activities:
• Generate procurement, supply chain and funding landscapes to identify key challenges and develop strategies in target countries to enable scale-up plans for pulse oximeters and multimodal devices
• Support development of total cost ownership tool and other analytic tools that promote best buy principles in global health and generate evidence for advocacy
• Collaborate with TIMCI country team and contribute to country-specific strategies that support scale up plans for pulse oximeters and multimodal devices
• In general, drive independent projects forward including analyses and ad hoc research needs.
Project 3: Improving Access to Medical Devices The COVID-19 Respiratory Care Global Market Coordination project is an 18-month project focused on supporting global efforts to reduce the COVID-19 burden and developing long-term strategies for improving access to oxygen therapy. Through this grant, PATH is assessing and supporting the COVID-19 respiratory care response efforts in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Project workstreams include a rapid assessment of in-country respiratory care equipment, landscaping of available suppliers of respiratory care devices and consumables, and country decision-making support through PATH’s country offices. The longterm objective of these workstreams is to translate immediate COVID-19 response efforts into a sustainable, improved state of access to oxygen and respiratory care equipment.
In addition to supporting the above workstreams, the selected MD Summer Associate will also assist the project team in applying learnings from respiratory care equipment markets to improve access to other priority medical devices. Key activities for the Summer Associate role may include: • Background market research: Mapping the equipment and services required to deliver respiratory care as part of the COVID-19 response in-country
• Data collection, modelling, and analysis: Creating and managing databases to track data from facility assessments such as commodities inventory, monitoring and evaluation indicators, and global supply data; creating data visualizations for analysis and to support dissemination
• Product market analysis: Conducting manufacturer landscapes, collecting and analyzing trade data, supporting pricing analyses and development of market intervention strategies for new products
• Report maintenance, presentation development, general coordination: Using smartsheets to update and track activities across the project countries; supporting the team to present information for a wide range of audiences, tracking deliverables and activities across project countries
General Skills/Eligibility for MD Summer Associate positions While the timing and structure of this position are designed to align with the U.S. academic calendar, applications are NOT limited to currently enrolled students, and PATH encourages applications from non-students who meet the required qualifications. General qualifications across the three projects include:

• For Project 1: Experience with business- and consulting-related communications a plus, including developing briefings, pitch materials, case studies, and other written content

• Ability to synthesize project findings and translate into programmatic/policy recommendations
• Ability to accurately interpret results from publications in the public health and economics fields
