Statistical Research Associate III

The Etzioni lab in the Biostatistics Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is seeking a full-time Statistical Research Associate (SRA) for cancer modeling studies.

We work closely with collaborators at the National Cancer Institute and other US and international partners to explore a wide range of questions about novel screening and prognostic biomarkers, personalized and targeted treatments, population cancer trends, and racial/ethnic disparities. Our work is statistical, computational, and policy-relevant. We use diverse datasets to create models of cancer progression with and without specific interventions, and we frequently rely on simulations to conduct virtual trials and study expected outcomes. The work is a dynamic mix of data analysis, computer programming, graphics development, policy research, and technical writing.

If you have a masters in statistics or biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, physics, economics, or a related field and are excited about using your skills to reduce the burden of cancer, then you may be a perfect fit for this open position. We are seeking an SRA with a background in quantitative analysis and proficiency with scientific programming.

  • Developing and implementing computational workflows to summarize or analyze datasets to inform disease models
  • Designing and programming simulations under the direction of a senior modeler
  • Developing statistical packages and user interfaces
  • Documenting and archiving data and code produced
  • Writing reports and manuscripts


  • A master’s degree in statistics or biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, physics, economics, or a related field
  • Experience with health data analytics, e.g., survival analysis, predictive modeling, longitudinal studies, survey data analysis
  • At least three years of relevant experience and demonstrated proficiency in scientific programming languages, such as R (strongly preferred), Python, Julia, or C/C++/Fortran
  • Strong organizational skills, meticulous documentation practices, and excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience with or enthusiasm to become proficient with developing and testing web applications, Linux computing environments, parallel execution, version control systems, modern programming/debugging/profiling support tools
  • Experience with R strongly preferred
