Spring Editorial Fellowship


In this incredible role, you'll be elbows-deep in developing out the presence and content of our platform, in a number of unique ways.

Individual must have the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and manage a large and complicated body of work. This is a pivotal position that focuses on detail-oriented editing, fact-checking and innovative digital storytelling.

We are looking for people who love building something from nothing, who thrive off facing a challenge without a defined solution and solving it, and who are self-motivated and exceed expectations. The startup environment is one where the success and failure of the company is directly related to the first few founding members and the effort they put forth – if that sounds exhilarating to you, you are an entrepreneur!

Fellowships are part-time, unpaid, and remote, and we provide the opportunity for school credit.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
-Look at the stories we publish, figure out the types of writers we are looking for, and begin developing an extensive database of excited, engaged content-producers.
-Pitch, develop and work with the editorial team to create original content
-Work with editorial team to ensure high quality of every piece of published The Tempest content
-Offer real-time feedback/guidance to The Tempest editors and drive article editing process
-Provide original coverage during publishing hours, including special news events

WHAT WE NEED:
-You understand the current media landscape and the major trends happening to digital publishers, specifically
-You are fluent in Microsoft Word & Excel.
-Knowledge of Wordpress, SEO, and data analytics a plus.
-Previous editing experience at a high-volume online publication or news outlet is a plus
-A strong attention to detail and perfectionist personality
-Deep knowledge of AP Style
-Consistent ability to fix troubled stories with skill and diplomacy, without altering the writer's voice
-A thorough understanding of sound journalistic practices and ethics
-Willingness and comfort with editing stories across verticals
-Knowledge of the online journalism landscape and The Tempest’s place within it
-You believe in obsessively checking your email and getting back to people within the time constraints.
