Social Media Content Assistant

The IU Department of Journalism and Public Relations at IUPUI is seeking a talented person to create content for liberalarts.iupui.edu/departments/journalismPR and the department’s social media channels. In this role, you will be promoting the Department of Journalism and Public Relations within the IU School of Liberal Arts. The Department offers:
•         One major (Journalism)
o        Students can choose from three concentrations: Journalism, Sports Journalism, Public Relations
•         Two undergraduate certificates (Journalism, Public Relations)
•         One minor (Advertising)
•         Two graduate degrees: Master of Arts in Sports Journalism, Master of Arts in Public Relations
o                     Sports Capital Journalism Program
 
Your primary goal is to increase the visibility and awareness of the Department via social media and the Department’s website. In addition to a blog on liberalarts.iupui.edu/departments/journalismPR, we have presence on the following social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. This person will help the Department launch a YouTube channel and create an editorial calendar.
 
Primary Responsibilities
•         Develop content for the Department’s social media channels and write stories for liberalarts.iupui.edu/departments/journalismPR. Possible stories include, but are not limited to, student and alumni profiles, internship news, faculty updates, coverage of journalism and public relations student organizations, reactions to journalism news
•         Create videos and help launch a Department YouTube channel
•         Create an editorial calendar
•         Regularly monitor and engage in social media activity
•         Pitch ideas for blog posts and write blog posts as needed
•         Participate in project and brainstorming sessions, Department meetings, and other assignments as directed.
 
What you will learn:
Students will gain writing, researching and fact-checking skills, and learn to make effective use of information technology. Students will use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to create story ideas and content, and to improve the department’s communication tools. Students will improve their active listening skills by interacting with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. Students will gain knowledge of journalism and public relations ethics. Students will learn how to stay organized and manage their time effectively by balancing various tasks in a work setting. 

Qualifications
•         Students pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
•         Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications
•         Excellent interpersonal skills, time management, and organizational skills
•         Working knowledge of social media management platforms and practices
•         Working knowledge of search engine keywords and optimization
•         Strong research skills
•         Creative and curious
•         Reliable, self-motivated, team player
•         Ability to meet deadlines
•         Demonstrated ability in using Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
 
Preferred Qualifications
•         Students with a major in journalism, communication studies, or related field
•         Prior communications and web publishing experience is preferred but not required
•         Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite design application a plus
