Body Positivity Internship (Longhorn Wellness Center)

The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program allows students to spend a summer handling a special project for the university designed to prepare them for life after graduation. Interns will work 19 hours per week for 10-weeks. These part-time internship positions offer a competitive compensation package that includes an hourly wage. Due to COVID-19, we are currently planning for each of our internships to take place virtually. Housing assistance may be provided on a case by case basis after internship positions are offered. Undergraduate students are eligible to apply. The internship runs from May 31, 2021 to August 6, 2021. The application is due February 14, 2021.

The Office

A student's health and their ability to thrive academically are closely linked. The Longhorn Wellness Center (LWC) supports the mission of University Health Services by offering programs that help prevent health conditions or health-related behaviors from being a barrier to a student's academic and personal success.

The Project

The intern will work with the Mental Health Promotion Coordinator at the Longhorn Wellness Center to create body positivity/health at every size/body image public health programming on the University of Texas at Austin's campus. The intern will research programming on other campuses, provide a literature review on relevant research, create recommendations for programs/initiatives, and help to create a marketing plan for implementing programs on campus.

Things You’ll Do

  • Researching body positivity/health at every size/body image programming at various educational institutions.
  • Scheduling informational meetings with other educational institutions to learn more about their programming, challenges, and successes. 
  • Create a literature review on public health initiatives surrounding body positivity/health at every size/body image research.
  • Provide recommendations for programming the UT at Austin surrounding these topics. 
  • Help create a marketing and communication plans for programming.
  • Participate in all required Division of Student Affairs Internship Program cohort activities and assessments

Who You Are (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Familiarity with public health theories
  • Basic understanding of research methods
  • Understand the importance of including fat positivity in body image programming
