Operating Room Services: Sterile Supply Technician

The Operating Room Service encompasses most of the second floor of the AAHA accredited UF Small Animal Hospital and includes 12 standard operating rooms and 2 additional operating rooms for minimally invasive procedures along with a centralized sterile supply area. This service interacts with all other services of the Small Animal Hospital providing a sterile environment for cases such as orthopedic arthroscopies, exploratory laparotomies, to ophthalmologic cases such as cataract removals and vitrectomies.
 
Technicians working in sterile supply are responsible for maintaining and sterilizing instrumentation and equipment needed for surgical procedures. This includes working with large instrument washers, ultrasonic cleaners, autoclaves, and gas sterilizers.

They also on occasion provide assistance before and during surgical procedures. This includes pre-operatively they work in conjunction with the Anesthesia & Pain Management team to prepare patients for surgery, specifically surgical site prep including shaving and aseptic skin prep. To prepare for surgery, they make sure all instrumentation and equipment is available for use, set-up the sterile field, and additionally provide any additional assistance intraoperatively.

Overall, both roles are integral members of the team for various specialty services that utilize the operating rooms for their surgical procedures.
