Peer Career Advisor
Peer Career Advisors serve as members of the Career Development Staff to provide resources and services to Capital students and alumni. In addition, they have individual projects and assignments that enhance their own career development
Internship Duration:
- August 2021 - May 2022
Hours/Schedule:
- 5 hours on duty (or as required for credit) + 1 hour training meeting per week. The specific "On-Duty" hours (9 am - 5 pm office coverage for walk-in appointments) and training meeting time to be arranged among the PCA team.
Compensation:
- Hourly rate of $9.25 per hour. Additionally, internship credit is available through major departments of Communication, Leadership & Management, Marketing, Professional Writing, and Psychology.
Meet individually with students and alumni during "drop-in" hours providing help with career related issues, including:
- Critiquing resumes and cover letters
- Explaining how to use Handshake and other resources for job and internship searches, providing information on career libraries
- Directing students to the appropriate professional staff person for additional assistance
Work on individual projects related to student's major and/or career path
- The projects are designed to help with your career exploration and portfolio development (for example: marketing, event planning, editing personal statements, etc).
- Projects will be chosen or designed by the PCA with the approval of the supervisor.
- Projects are to be worked on during scheduled office hours and other times at the discretion of the intern within the agreed-upon deadline for completion.
Assist with office operations including:
- Maintaining records and databases
- Assuring adequate stock of printed resources
- Answering general office phone and responding to inquiries
Attend training sessions and weekly meetings to gain the necessary skills to perform duties and learn about career development.
Requirements to apply:
- A current junior, sophomore, or first year
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- GPA of at least 2.75
- Major or desired career path relevant to Communication, Counseling, Employer Relations, Higher Education/Student Affairs, Human Resources, or Professional Writing
- Willing to attend a two-day training session before classes begin in August
- Willing to schedule on-duty hours between 9 am – 5 pm on weekdays
- Willing to commit for the entire academic year 2021 – 2022
- In good standing with the university
