Community engagement and health education fellow / trainee

The trainee will support work within the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Columbia
Research Unit (CRU) and PrEP Working Group. They will work within the clinical and research
teams to support the development, finalization, and dissemination of health information,
education material, and communication material as well as conduct community outreach
activities in support of clinical trials for COVID-19 and HIV treatment and prevention.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct literature reviews and syntheses of current priority topics and emerging topics
of interest for the DiD or the CRU. Syntheses will include the development of
infographics and the development of health education materials (e.g., blogs and
infographics and social media) with the aim of disseminating information and improving
awareness about HIV prevention and COVID prevention and treatment
- Design and share social media posts [using the CRU social media accounts/pages] to
educate community members about current research
- Design and share social media posts [using the CRU social media accounts/pages] to
recruit participants for studies
- Design recruitment material (e.g. flyers) to be used in participant outreach for upcoming
and ongoing studies
- Liaise with medical providers (e.g. inpatient teams, outpatient care givers) to inform
providers about studies and recruit potential participants
- Conduct virtual and in-person recruitment for HIV prevention clinical studies at on-
campus sexual health clinics [studies focus on assessment of attitudes regarding
modalities of HIV prevention including Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP); populations of
interest include cisgender women, transgender individuals, and men who have sex with

Attributes, experience, and skills
- Bright, self-motivated, outgoing, well-organized
- Able to work fluidly with a multidisciplinary group of researchers
- Able to participate in multiple projects simultaneously
- Previous experience in community outreach/community engagement and/or experience
with social media design/communications/advertising
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Completed two semesters of Biology coursework
- Knowledge of COVID prevention and HIV prevention strategies

- Spanish language skills preferred

  • Timeline: Spring 2021 
  • Start date: On or around Feb 15
  • Time commitments: Roughly 6-10hours per week. 
  • Pay: $16-$18/hr
