Geology Specialist
The role:
Do you “dig” investigating and solving challenges? Join our Geo-Environmental team in Bend, because ODOT “rocks!” Geologist specialists assist in the development of geotechnical and hazardous materials investigation programs by conducting surface and subsurface geotechnical (soil/rock) investigations, and provides sources of construction materials for transportation facilities construction and maintenance.

A day in the life:
- Perform surface and subsurface investigations.
- Determine field investigation strategies.
- Monitor and oversee operation of drill personnel and equipment during geologic investigations.
- Perform field work and geologic reconnaissance to collect engineering geology data.
- Oversee consultant geotechnical drill crews in the proper installation of slope inclinometers, piezometers, settlement measuring instruments and water level monitoring equipment.
- Write technical reports and assist with permits.
- Sample and conduct field tests on construction materials such as soils and rock.
- Review potential material sources to ensure quality and quantity of materials.
- Prepare maps with survey instruments and CADD (MicroStation) to develop site operation plans and specifications.
- Coordinate material source development with external stakeholders.
- Perform hazardous materials site assessments, hazmat clean up and site remediation to support projects and to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Provide technical assistance and assist in presenting hazardous materials information to consultants, the public and other agencies.
- This position requires frequent travel with overnight stays.
- Exposure to active construction sites, hazardous materials, heavy construction equipment and drills, at sites where blasting with high explosives is occurring, working in and around heavy traffic, and working in remote locations is expected.
- About 45% of this job is field work with exposure to adverse site and weather conditions.
- Work within the railroad right of way, regular monitoring of instrumentation and regular working around heavy drilling is expected.

You must have:
A geologist in training registration from the Oregon State Board of Geologist Examiners (OSBGE)
AND
Two (2) years of experience applying geology theory, principles, standards and methods to real world situations in a business setting.
You will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
Note: Candidates who possess a geologist in training from another state are encouraged to apply with the ability to obtain one from the Oregon State Board of Geology Examiners within six months of hire.

- Knowledge and experience in engineering geology and hazardous materials exploration sampling and field-testing techniques as it relates to development, construction and maintenance of transportation facilities.
- Knowledge and experience in safety procedures at construction project sites that include uneven or steep terrain, hazardous materials, busy highway traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- Experience working in a team environment with multiple disciplines.
- Experience in project scoping, scheduling and budgeting.
- We may give preference to candidates who have a registered geologist (RG) registration.
