'CuseWorks: Welcome Ambassador International (Unpaid Volunteer)

Position Description
WAI (Welcome Ambassador International) is a group of professionally trained student volunteers. They are committed to helping international students adapt to university campus life in a new cultural environment. As part of the Center for International Services, WAIs will assist international students with topics such as: airport pickup, what they need to do after they arrive in Syracuse, residence hall check-in, campus visits, and group discussions.

Each academic year, about 30 volunteers will be trained to become a WAI to help new international students. Many WAIs are also international students, so WAIs have personal experience of what international students are about to face, what they need, and how to help them. Our domestic student WAIs are also familiar with Syracuse’s local culture and campus, and they are very willing to help students from other cultural backgrounds.

WAI Responsibilities
  • Participate in training approximately one week before the start of spring semester, and meetings organized by the Center for International Services
  • Assist new students in advance before they arrive, answer their questions online, and hold regular group meetings

  • Lead activities for the new freshmen/transfer students during orientation week (online and in-person)
  • Stay connected with new students during the semester and answer questions
