Artist Management Internship
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
This role is perfect for someone who would like to further develop their passion for the arts, their organizational and business acumen, and their social skills. The Artist Manager Intern will delve into the soft and hard skills of managing and assisting a visual artist. The Intern will be supporting the artist's general studio practice, commission requests, grant applications, and most importantly assisting in the making of her first solo show, projected to take place at the end of summer 2021, and funded by Chicago's DCASE (Department of Cultural Affairs and Services).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Researching venues, artist, galleries, marketing and editorial platforms
-Managing timelines and due dates for applying to grants, corresponding for August solo show, commissions
-Brainstorming and executing creative, relevant and broad marketing for August solo show
-Editing applications language, solo show literature, and overseeing other crucial correspondences
-Growing and broadening artist's reach building up to August solo show
The guideposts will be:
- Self- Education: Look at assigned webinars, workshops or readings and apply/incorporate those concepts into tasks and conversations w/ artist
- Research: Compile relevant websites, online publications, newspapers, galleries, visual artists, residencies, grants, call for artists, and contacts. This is legwork that will support the following guideposts.
- Communication: Meet with the artist and discern their needs, goals, and direction. Learn and understand the artist’s stage of career, their materials and concepts. Discern where their work best fits in the landscape of the art scene, and/or how to carve out appropriate opportunities.
- Time management: Coordinate your efforts and tasks with the artists, hold yourself and the artist accountable for creating and following important timelines
- Action: Show up and network at events (live or virtual - all health and safety risks will always be considered). Oversee physical projects, assist in transporting supplies, assist in setting up for work or exhibition.
- Business and Budgeting: Create invoices, update and maintain budgets, negotiate/create/issue contracts, monitor commissions
- Envisioning: Use our imagination and passion to envision what does not exist. What opportunities, concepts, or connections in Chicago’s art scene need new attention? How can we create something new?
REQUIREMENTS:
- Personal passion for visual arts across genres and eras
- Desire to support and get involved in the local Chicago art scene (visual, music, performance)
- Detail Oriented
- Interpersonal skills
- Self-motivated work ethic
- Willingness to learn new research tools
- Experience with Google Suite
- Has own laptop

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Rebecca is a Chicago-based producer, curator, educator and visual artist with roots in New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. Starting at age eleven she trained for seven years in the classical tradition of oils, watercolors and pastels with artist Barbara Herzberg.
She is a graduate of Skidmore College, where she performed comedy, produced the National College Comedy Festival, and majored in American Studies and minored in Studio Art.
She has participated in intensive studio art and art history programs in Florence, Rome, London, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She went on to study at the Art Students League of New York, The Glasgow School of Art, and The Chicago Mosaic School.
She has taught with After School Matters and has spearheaded multiple large-scale mosaic projects with students in kindergarten through high school.
As a Studio Manager and Conceptual Designer for David Wallace Haskins Studio, she helped to prepare a groundbreaking solo show at the Elmhurst Art Museum.
While acting as Artistic Curator at The Den Theatre, she produced and curated the original monthly music series DIN AT THE DEN, elevating emerging musicians with her artistic direction. Her work as Music Program Director at Uncommon Ground deepened her roots in Chicago's music renaissance.
Her residency at WNDR museum showcased her pastel portraiture work.
Her artwork revolves around themes of sexuality, perception, emotionality, and intersectional feminism. She cares about cultivating cultures of liberation, growth among fellow artists, taking her artwork 100% seriously, and taking herself 0% seriously.
