Longform Narrative Podcasting Intern (REMOTE)- Winter/Spring 2021

NPR’s Winter/Spring 2021 Internship Program will be fully remote. 
Program Duration: January 11 - April 16, 2021
NPR is seeking an intern to support its narrative, longform podcasting work. This position will work across multiple shows, including Embedded (a documentary news podcast), Rough Translation (a narrative podcast featuring international stories), and Invisibilia (a narrative podcast that explores invisible forces). 
This internship is an opportunity to work with multiple award-winning teams on all aspects of podcast production — including scouting for stories, booking interviews, conducting pre-interviews and interviews, researching, writing and assembling drafts, editing audio, and scoring. Additionally, the intern will learn how to promote the episodes on social media. 
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct research for stories we’re working on
  • Log taped interviews and/or correct computer-aided transcriptions
  • Call and pre-interview potential guests
  • Book guests and arrange interviews via phone, Zoom, tape syncs, ISDN, etc.
  • Pitch ideas and provide feedback at editorial meetings
  • Monitor and publish on official NPR social media accounts
  • Write digital copy for NPR.org versions of stories
  • Monitor listener inboxes for feedback and tips from listeners
  • Mix audio for promos
  • Assist in fact-checking
  • Give feedback on unfinished episodes in group edits
  • Find archival tape for episodes
WHO CAN APPLY?
  • LOCATION: Must be planning to work throughout the term of the Winter/Spring 2021 internship from the United States and authorized to work in the United States. 
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship. 
REQUIRED SKILLS 
  • Strong interest in longform journalism and storytelling
  • Curious about the news, current events and surprising ways to shed light on them
  • Can handle multiple long-term projects and tasks at once
  • Proficient on social media platforms, especially Twitter
PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Audio production experience strongly preferred but not required 
  • Devours podcasts and thinks a lot about audio journalism
  • Knowledge and comfort with ProTools is preferred but not required
