College Intern – HR Communications


Some of what you'll be doing: 

This position meets the Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers criteria for Washington State. During the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order, most, if not all, of this work will be performed remotely. Social distancing and personal protective equipment guidelines will be followed when required to work onsite. 

The employee communications program within HR ensures that the Port of Seattle’s 2,100+ employees stay well informed about programs, events, initiatives, and changes within the organization. You will assist the HR Communications Specialist in managing the internal communications program.  

Some of your essential duties include: 
  • Conducting informational interviews of Port employees.  
  • Producing stories (preferably video), articles, employee spotlights, and announcements. 
  • Developing and maintaining content on the employee intranet website. 
  • Designing and publishing branded communications materials, including forms, infographics, PowerPoint presentations, learning materials, and event materials such as flyers and programs. 
  • Providing periodic administrative support to various HR-led programs and events. 

Who you are: 
  • A student – You must be currently enrolled undergraduate or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) in a degree program such as art, communications, English, film, journalism, media production, marketing, human resources, public relations, political science, videography, or other related field. 
  • A creative, clear communicator – You know how to put your audience first, crafting the right words, graphics, photos, or video to engage their interest. You are a friendly conversationalist, who is comfortable interviewing others and asking clarifying questions to draw out the most relevant and interesting details.  
  • Organized and proactive – You have a track record of successfully meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced working environment. You can balance and prioritize multiple, simultaneous projects.  
  • Trustworthy – You can be relied upon to work increasingly independently under decreasing supervision and you know how to maintain confidentiality. 
  • A resilient optimist – When obstacles or problems arise, you look for creative, constructive solutions. 
  • Desired – You have experience with videography. You have 1-2 years of experience contributing published content to a newspaper, yearbook, blog, YouTube channel, or other media outlet. You have experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or InDesign. You have some knowledge of web design principles and coding languages such as HTML and CSS.

What else you need to know: 
  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, in order to travel locally to project sites. 
  • Work Schedule – This is a part-time (up to 20 hours per week) position during the school year with a possible extension to a full-time (40 hours per week) position in the summer. Normal work hours will be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. 
  • Work Environment – You will generally work in an office environment, with Port of Seattle Headquarters at Pier 69 in downtown Seattle as your primary work location. Working outdoors and travel to other Port facilities, including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, may be required when interviewing employees or documenting stories. 
  • Limited Duration – This is a limited duration position and is expected to last no longer than August 31, 2021. 
  • Overtime Eligible – You are eligible for overtime pay in this role. 
  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
