Humanities in Action Internship: Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity and University of Mary Washington

The purpose of this fellowship is to identify a talented young person majoring in one of the humanities with deep personal commitments to the ideals of equity and social justice for an opportunity to see how those ideals are put into practice in an iconic non-profit organization serving Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the surrounding counties. The successful applicant will shadow the executive director and her leadership team to contribute to addressing and to come to understand the challenges in putting our ideals into practice. Cassie Kimberlin, executive director of the Greater Fredericksburg affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, will supervise the intern who will assist the leadership team in achieving the short, medium, and long term goals of the organization, namely, to help address the issue of affordable housing in the Fredericksburg region.

During the pandemic, GFHFH will permit students to accept an internship whether they can be present in person or can only contribute remotely. Students can accept this internship for credit. The recipient of this award will receive a $500 stipend provided by the Khatib Program in Religion & Dialogue.

Application Process

This internship is designed for students majoring in the humanities to put their unique training to use in addressing critical problems in the Fredericksburg regions. UMW students majoring in Classics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at UMW will be preferred in this process, but all students majoring in the humanities are encouraged to apply.

All students will apply for the scholarship through this portal. You will be asked to attached a brief (no more than 1.5 pages) cover letter in which (1) you address discuss your qualifications for this internship (specifically, your training in the humanities and the kinds of issues addressed therein that you have found most meaningful in your research as well as relevant work history and volunteering) and (2) tell us why you want this internship and what you hope to learn. You will also be asked for a resume of your academic training so far and relevant work history and, if relevant, volunteering. You should also provide the name and contact information of one reference that speaks to your academic accomplishment and your character and work habits.

Your letter, resume, and the name and contact information of one reference should be saved as three separate documents (PDF, Word doc, or Rich Text Format) and sent electronically to cprd@mail.umw.edu. Deadline for our receipt of materials is Thursday, March 17, 2022. A select group of students will be asked to interview with UMW and GFHFH representatives on Wednesday, March 23, 2022. The second Humanities in Action intern will be named on Friday, March 25, 2022.
