Engineer - Mechanical/Structural - Job ID 10329
The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking skilled mechanical/structural engineers for exciting relevant NASA small satellite projects such as the Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (SunRISE) (https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-selects-mission-to-study-causes-of-giant-solar-particle-storms), and proposals for NASA opportunities with missions in Low Earth Orbit to planetary small spacecraft. The mechanical/structural engineers are responsible for design, analysis, assembly, integration and test (AI&T) of small satellites and may act as the mechanical project lead for concept and requirement development, as well as providing technical support to related proposal efforts. The successful candidate should be familiar with industry standard best practices for static and dynamics analysis of space flight hardware. The candidates should demonstrate the ability to proactively engage team members to resolve design flaws, schedule concerns and incompatible requirements with an emphasis on delivering functional hardware, support interactions with customers, and provide technical support to related proposal efforts.
The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), a University Affiliated Research Center, has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for almost six decades. Our expertise is in space and airborne IR, VIS, UV, and RF sensors, small satellite technologies, test and calibration, cybersecurity, data visualization and assurance, and ground stations.
Responsibilities will include:
1) Mechanical design
2) Structural analysis (Static and Dynamic)
3) Coordinate fabrication and purchase of flight hardware
4) Assembly of small satellites
5) Execution of test plans and procedure
6) Effective communication through written reports and presentations

· Must be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
· MS in mechanical engineering
· 10+ years of related experience
· Spacecraft design experience in a space environment.
· Proficient in the use of computer-aided analysis tools (FEMAP for pre- and post-processing of finite element models; knowledge of NASTRAN for structural analysis)
· Ability to manage vendors and/or sub-contractors including the creation of specifications and statement of work (SOW)
· Experience in thermal analysis as well as structural/dynamics analysis
