Position: Web Assistant Fellow
Duration: 6 Month Fellowship (26 weeks): Starting June - Dec 2020 (dates are dependent upon the start date)
Location: Southwestern Regional Office, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Fellowship Description:
The Forest Service is looking for a six-month paid professional intern (Resource Assistant), with the possibility of an extension, to join a dynamic team supporting partnerships and engagement programs in their Southwestern Regional Office, based in Albuquerque, N.M.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the 11 national forests and grasslands of the Forest Service Southwestern Region, working for the Office of Communication & Engagement Web Team.
- Work assignments will be designed to improve our public facing websites, helping to transition to a modern design and prepare for future modernization efforts.
- Perform tasks to help update and maintain web content.
- Identify and prioritize site remediation using reporting tools such as Siteimprove and Google Analytics.
- Participate as a member of the Web Team.
- Take on other duties as assigned.
Please note this work is primarily conducted in an office setting, but there may be occasional opportunities to attend meetings with partner organizations and visit national forests in the region.
The Resource Assistant will receive a stipend. A monthly housing stipend is possible. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Fellows will work and communicate with a HAF Program Manager during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3 blog posts highlighting their experience and development. Fellows will coordinate and participate in Latino Conservation Week 2020, scheduled during mid-July.
Special or Preferred skills:
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English; bilingual skills a plus.
- Experience in managing projects, such as meeting deadlines, collaborating with others and ensuring that deliverables meet project needs.
- Skill in some or all of the following: Microsoft Office suite, social media, SharePoint and databases.
- Enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team player.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ages 17 and up
- Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for 26 weeks/6 months
- Starting June 15, 2020 or earlier
- Driver’s license required OR preferred dependent on public transportation
- RA may be required to drive a government vehicle
- Education Level: 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student, recent grads, or young professionals
- Minimum: completed 2 years at accredited university or earned an Associate’s degree or higher. Degree or demonstrated interest in one of the following (or related) fields:
- Web Development, HTML, CSS
- Database management/computer science
- Communication
- Education
- Business
- Natural Resources/Science
- US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required
- Participation in US Forest Service Orientation Training scheduled for June 15-19, 2020 in Lakewood, CO. Travel arrangements covered.
Stipend + Benefits:
- $500 weekly pay stipend based on a 40-hour workweek*
- $1000 monthly housing stipend available
- $50 monthly commuting stipend
- Option for health insurance coverage during full term
- Up to $1,000 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
- Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.

*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
