The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently is currently looking for an enthusiastic engineer who has a passion for creative and innovative solutions for the state-highway transportation system. We are looking for an entry-level or mid-level engineer who wants to dive into all elements of traffic analysis and operations. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing technical tasks related to traffic operations and traffic design, as well as assisting in field site assessments. This position plays a key role in contributing safe and efficient operations of state highways, as well as creating low cost project enhancement ideas. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
- Prepare, review and analyze data, including summarizing crash data.
- Conduct field assessments and recommend safety improvements.
- Provide scoping level documentation, schedule, and estimates for work zone, pavement marking, and signing plans.
- Perform studies that include collecting horizontal curve data, no pass inventory, sign inventories, speed studies, and roadway delineation.
- Review projects containing pavement markings, signing, and Work Zone Traffic Control prepared by other teams, cities, counties and consultants for construction on state highways.
- Develop minor operational enhancement projects in coordination with Paving Projects, Low Cost Enhancements, and special funding.
- Maintain various databases to track inventory and data necessary to evaluate current conditions and conduct field assessments.
- Respond to inquiries regarding traffic operational performance and work with WSDOT Communications for traffic impact outreach.
- Communicate proficiently, both orally and in writing, and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the public, contractors, supervisors, local agencies and other department staff.
- Develop practical solutions to complex issues.
Qualifications
This position has been approved for in-training; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Engineer 1 or 2 level.
Required qualifications for a Transportation Engineer 1 are:
- Bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering.
Required qualifications for a Transportation Engineer 2 include one of the following:
- Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent experience; OR
- Certification as an Engineer-In-Training AND one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent experience; OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
In addition to the above qualifications, candidates at any level are required to have:
- Excellent computer and software skills, including the ability to use CAD and other design software.
- Ability to create accurate plans, specifications and estimates.
- The ability to apply appropriate judgment in selecting and adapting to new techniques and technology to solve problems.
- The ability to present highly technical concepts to your peers.
- The ability to read, interpret, and implement department policies, principles, standards, specifications and practices.
- The ability to traverse uneven terrain for field site assessments and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred qualifications are:
- Bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering.
- Engineer-In-Training Certification.
- Two (2) years of traffic operations or traffic engineering experience.
- Experience with the Highway Safety Manual.
- Flagger Certification and/or Traffic Control Supervisor Certification.
