Development Manager
The Development Manager furthers NCFL’s mission to eradicate poverty through education solutions for families by supporting the organization’s fundraising goals and an $11,000,000 budget. This position works collaboratively with other members of NCFL’s fundraising and external affairs teams to identify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward a wide range of foundation, corporate, and government prospects to support NCFL’s work across the United States.
Prospect Research: (10%)
  • Proactively research and evaluate funding opportunities against NCFL’s needs and programs 
  • Summarize funding opportunities and their alignment to NCFL’s work and present to the appropriate team members
  • Research internal and external statistics, trends, and data for use in strengthening grant proposals
  • Proactively keep informed on current philanthropic trends and language to strengthen grant proposals
Gifts Cultivation and Relationship-building: (20%)
  • Proactively conduct outreach to new prospects based upon research. Provide thoughtful updates and touch points for engagement to move new prospects toward solicitation.
  • Engage existing NCFL donors in strategic ways to maintain strong relationships and secure additional gifts.
  • Build strong donor relationships that advance NCFL’s mission and ensure its long-term success
  • Assist with the development of presentations for various stakeholders
  • At times, participate in presentations for various stakeholders in collaboration with other staff.
  • Support site visit logistics 
Grant-writing and Gift Solicitation: (35%)
  • Manage and carry out the writing process for a variety of solicitations to fund priorities as identified in the organization’s strategic plan including: grants to private foundations (both national and local); concept papers; letters of inquiry; federal grants; contracts
  • Consult with program staff as needed to accurately and effectively describe NCFL’s work
  • Collaborate with program staff to develop and draft new, compelling concept ideas
  • Manage overall grant and reporting calendar 
Annual Conference: (20%)
  • Identify conference sponsors and solicit sponsorships
  • Work with other External Affairs staff to develop a menu of conference sponsorship options
  • Work with other External Affairs staff to carry out any sponsor-related events at conference
Reporting: (5%)
  • Work with program and evaluation staff to compile information needed for funder reports. Draft funder reports for specific donors/prospects.
  • Assist Director of Development as needed in the preparation of reports for board or staff meetings regarding department progress to date on team goals
Budgeting: (5%)
  • Work with NCFL’s finance team to develop budgets for solicitations
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion in working with budget numbers
Administrative: (5%)
  • Carry out necessary administrative duties related to donor and prospect tracking in Salesforce.
  • Create and manage library of boilerplate and specialized language, grant support documents, and timely/relevant research to support grant proposals
Candidate Qualifications and Characteristics:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least two years of experience with fundraising, communications, OR a writing-intensive role.
  • Direct fundraising experience a plus.
  • Exceptional writing, interpersonal, and verbal skills
  • Experience working with government agencies and corporate and private foundations strongly preferred.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the fundraising cycle and with the nuances of different types of funders
  • Sound judgment and comfort working with a portfolio of national funders
  • Experience writing and talking about contemporary education issues preferred. 
  • Ability to distill down complex subject matter into digestible terms for a variety of different audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and build strong relationships with donors and partners
  • Ability to travel to different locations within the United States 20% of the time.
  • Familiarity with issues surrounding racial equity and assets-based programming
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-changing environment and prioritize projects and tasks
  • Familiarity with fundraising databases a plus
