The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District) is a regional government agency, committed to achieving clean air to protect the public's health and the environment. The Air District accomplishes this goal through regulation of industrial facilities and various outreach and incentive programs designed to encourage clean air choices.

The Air District's jurisdiction encompasses all of seven counties - Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Napa, and portions of two others - southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma.


Under close supervision, the intern performs a variety of air quality and administrative support work. The Intern may be placed in a specific functional area or work in a broad range of areas. The purpose of this job classification is to provide students with an opportunity to apply their education to work and gain practical experience while exposing them to the operations and mission of the District.

This is a temporary training position. 

Interns may perform work that is directly related to their academic field or in their selected Division/Office. 

The District is currently accepting applications for the position of Intern in the following Divisions/Offices:
The Communications Intern will assist with the development of innovative communication strategies for the Air District. The intern will use best practices for digital communications to engage interested Bay Area residents and organizations in Air District projects and programs, and provide day-to-day administrative support for the Communications Office. The intern will also work on the Spare the Air program and will participate in staff meetings, attend community events and collaborate with other agencies to enhance the program.

The Air Quality Engineering Intern will provide technical support to engineering staff for special studies related to: air quality permits, California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) review, and facility health risk assessments. Interns will apply their academic studies to a practical setting and gain knowledge about the Air District's permitting process, air pollutants and control technologies, air quality rules and regulations, emissions inventory, and operations of the Engineering division.

Information Services
The Records Management Intern will support the Information Services Division with digitizing Air District records. The intern will assist with document scanning, verification, tracking, and review, as well as importing files to a Records Management software. The intern will gain practical organizational skills and learn the process, procedures, and the applicable laws of Records Management.
This internship is primarily located at the Air District office in Richmond, CA; intern will be scheduled to work at the San Francisco Headquarters 1 to 2 times per week.

Information Technology (Production System Office)
The Production System Office is comprised of three sections: Online Services, Data Services, and My Air Online. Online Services manages the Air District's websites to ensure public access to information, including air quality data, alerts, air permits, and regulations. Data Services provides for management of information related to the Air District's permit application, renewal, and registration process, including storage, retrieval, and reporting, as well as system integration and legacy data management. My Air Online manages the design, development, and implementation of web-based enterprise applications supporting the Air District's permitting, enforcement, and compliance programs.
  • Software Development
The Software Development Intern for the My Air Online section will collaborate and interact daily with a skilled team of software professionals in an Agile team-based environment. The intern will gain practical experience working and training in the following areas of the Software Development: Software Design, Quality Assurance, DevOps, and overall Scrum Process.
  • Web Development
The Web Development internship with the Air District Web Team will involve challenging opportunities, real world projects, and regular interaction with staff. The intern will work closely with content editors, developers, and project managers on a variety of projects for the Air District websites and online services including, and others. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in web editing as well as experience working in an Agile Scrum / Kanban team-based environment. The intern will gain practical work experience and an introduction to working with web-based systems for content management, learning management, and task management.

  • Air Quality Planning
The Air Quality Planning Section of the Planning & Climate Protection Division is seeking an intern to support ongoing efforts to reduce local air quality and greenhouse gas impacts from proposed land use projects and plans. The intern will assist staff with implementing the Air District's California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Program, including supporting the development of updated CEQA Air Quality Thresholds and Guidelines with recommended methods for analyzing and reducing air quality impacts. The intern will also assist with improving existing and developing new tools and resources to help Air District staff and lead agencies analyze local, regional and global air quality impacts from proposed projects and plans.
  • Climate Protection 
The Climate Protection Section of the Planning & Climate Protection Division is seeking an intern for the Diesel Free by '33 initiative, the Air District's program to assist local governments and municipalities to eliminate diesel emissions in local communities, throughout California, and beyond. The intern will work closely with Bay Area local governments in developing their diesel asset inventories, compiling diesel asset data, developing guidelines for initiative participants to report on progress, and compiling relevant model policies and best practices. The intern will work with a variety of local governments across the Bay Area; research policies and best practices; and conduct outreach to local government staff through surveys, webinars, etc. Outcomes for the intern will include gaining knowledge of diesel and zero-emission vehicles and equipment, existing funding programs, model policies and best practices, developing skills in technical writing and gaining experience working with local governments. 

Technology Implementation
The Technology Implementation Office cultivates partnerships between technology developers and customers and offers grants and loans for low-carbon technologies for the industrial and transportation sectors to accelerate climate action. The Technology Implementation Office is seeking an E-Mobility and Climate Tech Intern to support the office with the following Air District Programs: Clean Cars for AllClean TNC FleetsCharge!; and Climate Tech Finance. The intern will learn about developing climate and clean air incentive programs, as well as grant administration.

Terms of assignment

The internship is a paid 10-12 week program. Tentative internship start date is May 26, 2020 for students on the semester system, and June 15, 2020 for students on the quarter system. Interns may work up to 40 hours per week; work schedule will be set on an individual basis as determined upon the division's needs and intern availability.

Must be continually enrolled in and attending an accredited college or university (summer enrollment is not required).

Must be at or entering the junior, senior, or graduate level of college study with a declared major in engineering, chemistry, environmental science, policy, political science, communications, computer science, information system management, public relations, business administration, public administration, planning, atmospheric science, meteorology, public health or a closely related field.

Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher (where 4.0 is the highest GPA).
