Farm-Based Education Summer Fellowship
Position Title: Farm-Based Summer Camp Fellowship
Dates of Employment: June 15 – August 26, 2020 (seasonal position)
Hours: Monday thru Friday, 40 hours per week
We are seeking a summer-season, Middlebury student interested in learning from and working
alongside our farm-based education programs and staff. The student will live onsite and is
immersed in the daily rhythms of the farm and the cycle of the seasons. Farm-Based Camp
Educators team-teach up to 9 weeks of our summer camp program. We offer day camps for ages
4-14, and overnight camps for ages 12-17, which provide youth with opportunities to engage in
their food system, build relationships with peers, and explore natural communities. Mentorship
will be provided by education staff members; a variety of texts and resources; and through
independent reflection.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in an orientation to Shelburne Farms and in camp staff training
- Participate in mandatory CPR & First Aid Training, if not already certified
- Observe, team teach, and teach full-day camp for Shelburne Farms summer camp
- Participate in morning meetings and afternoon planning and debrief sessions, spend time
preparing lessons and materials
- Plan and implement full-day outside programs for campers; utilize agricultural and natural resources on the Farm as centers for inquiry and exploration in all weather
- Support a continuous effort to foster a culturally aware learning community, open to multiple perspectives
- Live on site as part of a residential learning community
- Check in regularly with mentors and supervisor to create and discuss performance, goals,
and work plan
- Communicate effectively with coworkers to create a respectful and communicative work
environment.
- Receive and incorporate constructive feedback from supervisor and mentors into teaching
practice
- Have the opportunity to participate in professional learning as part of the Fellowship.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with children in a camp, classroom, childcare, or similar capacity.
- Interest or experience in education, gardening, agriculture education, or natural ecosystems
- Stamina and enthusiasm to teach daylong programs outdoors in varying weather and terrain
- Valid First Aid and CPR Certification. Lifeguard certification preferred.
- Collaborative/flexible team member passionate about working with learners of all ages and abilities
- Current enrolled Middlebury College student
Compensation Details:
- The internship is funded with a $3,000 grant from CCI.
- Housing is provided on-site, living in the most beautiful setting on Lake Champlain at Shelburne Farms.

Because this is an internship funded by CCI for current students only, seniors graduating in May 2020 are not eligible. This internship is funded with a CCI award of $3,000.00. If you are offered and accept this internship, please be aware that your funding for this position is provided by CCI, and therefore you will be required to complete funded internship paperwork.
