Recreational Therapy Internship

The Oregon State Hospital, a division of the Oregon Health Authority, has a fantastic opportunity for a RECREATION THERAPY INTERNSHIP with an excellent team working to help people recover from their illness and return to their lives in the community.  

The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) provides patient-centered psychiatric treatment for adults with mental illness from throughout the state. The hospital's primary goal is to help people recover from their illness and return to their lives in the community.

What you will do!
As a recreation therapy intern at the Oregon State Hospital you will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of treatment services. You will be supervised by a CTRS, who will be your primary supervisor, although you may work with other Treatment Services Department staff in the course of your internship. The following outline should assist you to understand the expectations and time frames of your internship. Note that the outline is generalized and can change depending on the requirements of the hospital, your university, and at the discretion of your supervisor.
In general, your internship will be divided into four phases:
  • Weeks 1-5 General Orientation/Observation Phase
  • Weeks 6-9 Co-leadership Phase
  • Weeks 10-14 Leadership Phase
  • Weeks 15-16 Finalize Phase
During these phases the following categories and clinical skills will be addressed:
  • Orientation to Hospital, Treatment Services Department and AMRT (Art, Music, Recreation Therapies) Department
  • Professional Roles and Responsibilities
  • Observation

  • Planning Interventions and/or Programs
  • Implementing Interventions and/or Programs

  • Special event planning (if any happening during your internship)
You will work Monday - Friday from 8:00AM - 5:00PM (unless your supervisor works an alternative schedule). You are expected to work 40 hours per week (unless previously arranged with supervisor and Director of Recreation Therapy). 
Lunch is provided as part of your internship in the Kirkbride Café or Valley Café. 
At the beginning of each week, you are expected to complete a proposed schedule for the week. It is your responsibility to manage your time and to be able to complete your assigned tasks. If you need assistance with anything, your supervisor is available to help you. You will be provided with a time line of activities to complete. It is also your responsibility to notify your supervisor in advance of any timelines or assignments that are required by your school.
Week 1:
As a recreation therapy student you will attend New Employee Orientation provided by Oregon State Hospital Education and Development Department. This training is your first 6 days, 8:00AM - 5:00PM with a 1 hour lunch. 
Orientation/Observation Phase Weeks 2 – 5:
  • Review Recreation Therapy Internship Manual
  • Meet with Director of Recreational Therapy
  • Complete Treatment Services Orientation Checklist
  • Read at least 5 TR/RT articles (iDrive/RSD/Recreation Therapy/01 RT Internship Binder OR find new ones)

  • Research legislation regarding TR/RT

  • Once 560 hours reached, as required by NCTRC, complete necessary forms
  • Complete necessary forms for university for ending internship
  • Meet with Director of Recreational Therapy for exit interview
  • Save internship documents to iDrive/RSD/Recreation Therapy
  • Prepare office for leaving
  • Last day turn badge and keys to OSH Reception Center; exiting with either your Internship Supervisor or Director of Recreational Therapy
  • Assessments
  • Ensure all assessment are finalized in AVATAR
            Planning
  • Prepare 1:1 patients for your ending of internship
  • Prepare patients in groups for your ending of internship
  • Implementation
  • Lead treatment groups assigned by internship supervisor
  • Evaluation
  • Utilize evaluation techniques in group therapy setting
  • Recommend modification or areas of improvement if necessary
  • Documentation
  • Ensure all documentation has been approved by supervisor

  • Final supervisions with CTRS Internship Supervisor
  • Attend CTRS Group Supervisions (2nd and 4th week of month)
  • Attend Program AMRT/OT Group Supervision (3rd week of month)
  • Inform Interdisciplinary Treatment Team of your end of internship
