POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Health Educator - Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Allies AmeriCorps Member
SUD Allies is seeking a Health Educator to support the Outreach and Education Program at Lurie Children’s Hospital’s Division of Adolescent Medicine. This member will deliver high quality, medically accurate, LGBTQIA inclusive, and culturally responsive social emotional learning, prevention education and sexual health education curriculum to students in K-8th grade.
This position is committed to expanding Lurie Children's SUD prevention education programming and helping to leverage our existing connections to schools, families, and community partners in the service of these goals.
Administered by Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC), SUD Allies increases resources to combat substance use disorder for individuals, families, and communities. PHIMC provides the members with the training and professional development necessary to successfully enter the public health workforce.
A full-time contract is composed of 1700 hours of service over an 11-month period called a ‘term of service’. SUD Allies will address locally identified needs through direct service to the community. Members are placed at Host Sites that are organizations providing SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery services in Illinois. The majority of the member’s time is spent in service for the Host Site and fulfilling other SUD Allies AmeriCorps program requirements. The remaining hours may be dedicated to training and professional development opportunities. Members attend SUD Allies AmeriCorps and Serve Illinois Commission sponsored trainings and activities, participate in National Days of Service, attend monthly team trainings, and have the opportunity to participate in optional development and service activities.
Responsibilities:
Curriculum Expansion & Education Delivery (50%):
- Collaborate with adolescent medicine team to review and edit existing curriculum, in order to integrate Substance Use Prevention education into the materials.
- Prepare materials for delivery of education workshops to K-8th graders in school and community organizations.
- Co-facilitate social emotional learning, prevention, and sexuality education workshops with a staff educator.
- Maintain organized records of events and workshops
- Develop special projects based on interests, skills, and program needs
Relationship-Building & Community Partners Outreach (25%):
- Collaborate with adolescent medicine team and other community providers to improve access to sexuality education and social emotional learning for Chicago area students
- Collaborate with the Substance Use Prevention Coalition convened by Strengthening Chicago Youth, in order to expand outreach to other municipalities
- Collaborate with staff at Chicago Public Schools, Office of Student Health and Wellness, ensure efforts align with Healthy CPS goals.
Substance Use Prevention Communications (25%)
- Collaborate with SCY to promote the IGotThis substance use prevention communications campaign
- Continually review public policy and media information related to substance use and prevention and provide regular reports/briefs for both SCY and Adolescent Medicine Substance Use Prevention leadership teams
Qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older by term of service start date
- U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident
- Valid forms of documentation to prove date of birth and citizenship/naturalization/resident alien status; valid government issued photo identification
- BA or equivalent experience preferred
- Complete Federal and State criminal background checks and Sex Offender Registry check (all provided and coordinated by AmeriCorps program staff)
