Horticulturist

The City of Topeka Utility Department is seeking qualified candidates for a Horticulturist.

The Utility Horticulturist cares for and maintains a variety of flora and landscapes in various locations throughout the City of Topeka. Maintains native vegetation and plant life on Utility Department’s flood control and water quality projects, right-of-ways and other public properties.

Duties include the operation of a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, work vehicles, sprayers, push and riding lawn mowers, handheld and push trimmers, roto-tiller, sidewalk edger, and power and hand tools. Plans and organizes daily, weekly and monthly projects and maintains accurate and detail records of work completed throughout the week. May respond to stream obstructions and erosion inquiries and makes general presentations to the public. Works with Infrastructure Support Manager on NPDES permit regulations regarding public education, involvement, outreach and awareness.  Position work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Minimum qualifications:  Associates Degree (A.S.) or Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a Community, Junior, Technical or four-year College or University in Horticulture, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences or related field; three years related experience maintaining landscaped areas, preferably with native species. A combination of education and work experience may be substituted for the college degree. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and City insurable driving record.

$18.32 per hour
