Family Therapist

Responsible for therapeutic treatment through the principles of Family Systems Theory and case management for 12 residential youth, their families, and referring agencies. The Family Counselor may be assigned residents outside of their appointed house dependent upon residential census. Serves as the child and families advocate to provide and facilitate the best possible care and treatment available. The Family Counselor collaborates closely with the Experiential Specialist and the Quality Care Supervisor to promote the social, emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual well being of youth.  

Licensed Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Professional Counseling from an accredited college or university required. Knowledge, experience, and skills in working with children and families who have experienced trauma. One year related experience preferred. Minimum of a Limited License as a Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, or Professional Counselor. Good moral character. Must be able to type fluently with knowledge of general Microsoft programs.


  1. Adhere to the policies and procedures of Eagle Village Residential Services and State of Michigan.
  2. Develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans for youth in care.
  3. Provide support, encouragement, and role-modeling for the youth under his/her care, build meaningful and supportive relationships.
  4. Promote a holistic therapeutic approach, with specific attention and support to include family in programming, engaging family in treatment, and empowering families to determine direction for their son/daughter and themselves. When no “traditional” family is available as a resource, work to develop alternative support systems for the client.
  5. Provide a global agency view to a team by being a bridge between Eagle Village administration and program staff, through awareness and communication of agency planning, policies, and procedures.
  6. Provide stable and positive mentoring for residents; be able to assume an authoritative role while maintaining a primary helping relationship.
  7. Provide emotional support/therapy and crisis intervention for residents who have experienced sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
  8. Assist treatment team members with tasks as necessary and assigned, to provide for the proper functioning of your assigned unit.
  9. Planned therapeutic contact with each youth and their family in the regimen of weekly individual counseling, weekly group counseling, weekly group building, family counseling, and Family Legacy in accordance with the State of Michigan guidelines.
  10. Plan client’s visits away from the residential unit, including with whom, when, transportation arrangements and lent of visit.
  11. Coordinate/oversee client phone calls, clothing orders, mail received and other areas related to the personal needs of clients.
  12. Develop treatment objectives and a quarterly case plan collaboratively with the client, their parents, and referring worker. In addition, facilitate quarterly Case Review Meetings, with all parties in attendance, to discuss the client’s treatment objectives and plan for the next quarter.
  13. Develop Individual Program Modification plans as resident needs demand.
  14. Assure meeting of requirements of Managed Care Organizations related to case documentation, authorization, and reauthorization, etc.
  15. At client discharge, coordinate aftercare plans to insure treatment continuity for the client’s psychiatric and therapeutic care.
  16. Stay current and proficient in Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents and Parents (SITCAP) and be knowledgeable in Systems Theory when working with children and families.
  17. Maintain on-going relationships through weekly contact with DHS workers, Probation Officers, Attorneys, and parents/guardians by phone, email, and/or face to face in promoting smooth transition of youth into the community and various Eagle Village programs.
  18. Collaborate with the Quality Care Supervisor and Experiential Specialist to enhance treatment plan implementation.
  19. Complete all required paperwork from intake to discharge in a timely fashion, including the preparation and submission of Preliminary Service Plans, Initial Treatment Plans, Updated treatment Plans, Court Reports, Release Plans, 60 Day Follow-up Reports, CAURT reports, and Legacy & Intervention Reports.
  20. Complete assessment tools including required psychological testing
  21. Represent Eagle Village at court hearings providing testimony regarding the clients. This may be in the form of in-person appearance, video conferencing, or phone.
  22. Required to physically participate in a wilderness experiential component two times a year.
  23. Duties commonly required providing service during some evenings and weekends; crisis intervention or short-notice response may be necessary.
  24. Required to sign up and be available for “on-call” counselor duties on a rotating schedule throughout the year, including holidays.
  25. Working knowledge and adherence to the Eagle Village policy and procedure manual and the Employee Handbook such as participation in required training, academies, All Staff, and other required continuing education training.
  26. May be required to provide trainings to Community Agencies and/or at Conferences.
  27. Chair and/or participate in various agency committees and task forces on both a continuous and ad hoc basis.
  28. Adhere to and promote the agency’s mission and values in the execution of duties while recognizing and appropriately responding to the cultural differences among those served, as well as fellow staff members.
  29. Timely completion of all required orientations and in-service training, HWC, Experiential training, CPR, and maintain certification of the same if applicable.
  30. Weekly attendance at all Counselor meetings and Treatment Team meetings.
  31. Keep informed of current residential treatment program developments and activities, including family treatment/involvement innovations.
  32. Utilize educational opportunities and resources offered by the agency and through the profession for continued development of skills and clinical expertise (conferences, academies, therapist meetings, etc).
  33. Participate in research and evaluation projects as assigned; prepare presentations for colleagues and team members on selected relevant treatment topics.
  34. Perform any other reasonably related duties assigned by management.
