Mandarin Chinese Tutor

The Chinese Flagship Program
The SF State Chinese Flagship Program is federally-funded initiative for undergraduate students seeking careers related to China and the Chinese-speaking world. The Flagship Program provides language instruction, cultural training and overseas study experience to produce graduates with dual strengths in professional-level Mandarin language proficiency and their chosen career domain.
 
 
The Role
 The Chinese Conversation Program pairs Chinese Flagship students with native Mandarin-speaking tutors to help develop students’ language fluency. We are looking to hire a select group of fluent Mandarin-speaking SF State student tutors. Tutors are required to meet with each student for a one-hour conversation session each week. Depending on individual time availability, tutors may request to be assigned up to eight (8) one-hour sessions per week. Tutoring sessions may be unstructured conversations or prepared lessons that require advanced work from the student. Student need are individualized however most students will either be working on speaking, listening or reading comprehension. Session topics and format will vary depending on your (tutor) preferences and your student interests.
 
Eligibility and Compensation Information
To be eligible for employment as a Chinese Language Tutor for the Chinese Conversation Program, you must fulfill ALL of the requirements listed below:
 
·        Must be enrolled in at least 6 units as an undergraduate student or 4 units as a graduate student during the Fall 2019 semester
·       Must hold a U.S. Social Security Card. Non card holder will be considered but please note that extra time is required to process your application and you may not be assigned a role during the Fall semester.
·       Must be a native or near native speaker of Mandarin Chinese; fluency will be assessed during in-person interview
·       Must be interested in teaching
 
Tutors will be compensated $15.00 per hour. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt. Qualified applicants will be invited for a short interview and language assessment with department staff and faculty. Overseas candidates will be interviewed via Skype. Successful applicants will complete eligibility verification and hiring procedures as required by SF State, which may take up to three weeks to complete. However, work hours may be accrued after initial appointment and completed hiring verification procedures, to be compensated following hiring procedure completion.
