U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Summer Opportunities

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care". USAISR's mission is to provide combat casualty care medical solutions and products for wounded warriors, from self-aid through definitive care across the full spectrum of military operations; provide state-of-the-art trauma, burn, and critical care to Department of Defense beneficiaries and civilians; and provide Burn Flight Teams. This opportunity is located in San Antonio, TX.

Students and recent graduates will research under the guidance of ISR staff and primary researchers. Students participating in the ORISE program at ISR will gain hands-on experience in a real world laboratory environment, in addition to modern research technologies and techniques. This experience will also focus on personal career development in the areas of STEM, providing opportunities to collaborate and network with other students and researchers across all STEM disciplines.

  • Medical Countermeasures for Ocular Trauma
  • Dental and Maxillofacial Trauma

Appointment Length
This appointment is a summer research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Applicant should be a current student or recent graduate with coursework in STEM disciplines and an interest in researching military medical care in a state-of-the-art laboratory alongside highly trained military medical professionals.
