Hockey Analytics Intern, Colorado Avalanche

LOCATION: DENVER, CO 

REPORTS TO: HOCKEY ANALYST

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Colorado Avalanche are looking to hire a part-time analytics intern to work within the team’s Hockey Operations Department for the duration of the 2019-2020 season. This person will work with our Hockey Analytics team on a part-time basis to increase its analysis capabilities as well as assist with day-to-day tasks while getting the opportunity to improve his or her hockey and statistical skillsets. This position will report to our Hockey Analyst while serving under the umbrella of Assistant General Manager and Executive Vice President/General Manager/Alternate Governor.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Contribute to long-term coding-based projects

• Query information effectively from large servers to answer hockey staff questions

• Assist hockey analytics department with day-to-day tasks

• Partake in manual game tracking as needed

• Pay close attention to analytics trends and findings in the public sphere

REQUIREMENTS:

• Strong understanding of the game of hockey and its terminology

• Knowledge of the state of hockey analytics in the public sphere

• Some experience working in a statistical coding language, preferably R

• Some experience querying data using SQL

• High-level problem-solving and analytical skills

• Effective communicator, comfortable presenting in front of groups of people

• Ability to self-motivate, show initiative, work independently, and meet deadlines

EXPERIENCE GAINED:

• Work in a hockey operations environment

• Observe the work of hockey analysts on a day-to-day basis and throughout a season

• Improve statistical, coding, and analysis skillsets
