Energy Design Engineering Internship/Co-Op (Fall 2019)  

 
Role 
To support Tesla’s overall mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy, the Tesla Energy team is bringing our world leading battery technology to the grid. Tesla is leveraging its breakthrough firmware, electronics, test, and manufacturing capability to develop and deploy grid connected storage at residential, industrial, and utility levels.  
 
Tesla Energy is looking for amazing Interns who are passionate about harnessing electronics, firmware, and test technology areas to drive the world’s transition to a sustainable future. Internship roles in our teams provides significant independence and ownership of design and test projects, while still providing excellent mentorship and guidance. We emphasize collaboration in our work, and always encourage each other to have fun while we change the world together.  
 
Every intern takes on a wide variety of work areas across technology focus. In addition to diverse smaller projects, there will be a key showcase project for each intern.  
 
Responsibilities 
For firmware focused interns:  
  • Develop, enhance and debug new and existing real-time software in C, C++, and Python  
  • Automated software validation  
  • Hands on testing with real hardware  
  • Production and critical demonstration launch support  
  • Build new equipment / tools / scripts to automate manual tasks  
For electronics focused interns:  
  • Schematic design, circuit analysis/simulation, and design for low cost/high reliability  
  • PCB design  
  • Design validation, board/system bring up, production launch support  
  • Experience in embedded software development and scripting languages (C/C++, Python, HDL)  
For test focused interns:  
  • Design and execution of product level testing  
  • Hands on testing with real hardware  
  • Thorough documentation of test results and collaboration with design engineers to resolve any product problems found via test  
  • Troubleshooting test setup and/or device under test issues  
  • Designing and implementing next generation test hardware systems  
  • Test automation software development in Python and Golang  
 
Requirements 
  • Pursuing BS, MS, or PhD in Engineering Discipline.  
  • Highly independent, able to push projects forward without close supervision.  
  • Focused, committed to maximizing impact for themselves and Tesla from the internship.  
  • Fundamentals in physics and first principles engineering.  
  • Logical problem solving, knows when to ask for help, but always tries to solve problems on their own first.  
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and collaboration skills, and a preference for delivering as part of a team.  
  • Capable of understanding electrical schematics  
  • Experience reading and writing code in at least one programming or scripting language  
  • Preferred: Coursework or previous internship experience in core technology area of internship
