Graduate Assistant Writing Consultant

Graduate Assistant Writing Consultants work in the Augusta University Writing Center alongside undergraduate and faculty consultants. In addition to consulting with writers one-on-one, they assist the director with daily operations, program development and outreach, mentoring undergraduate consultants, and leading staff development. Graduate Assistant Writing Consultants also increase their knowledge of the theory and practice of teaching writing and receive many opportunities for professional development.

The primary duties of Graduate Assistant Writing Consultants will be working with graduate-level writers across disciplines. Additional duties may include:
·        Working with graduate, faculty, staff, undergraduate and community writers on any written or multimedia assignment at any stage in the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing) through face-to-face or online writing consultations
·        Providing insightful feedback on writing across disciplines; feedback focuses on both the specific assignment at hand and the writing process more generally
·        Providing writers with a reader’s perspective on their work by approaching the writing process through a rhetorical lens
·        Fostering a positive writing experience for students, faculty, and staff that visit the Writing Center
·        Assisting with day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Writing Center, including record-keeping and reporting to faculty or the director when appropriate
·        Being a role model and mentor to less experienced writing consultants
·        Contributing to staff professionalization and assisting with training of new consultants
·        Facilitating writing groups
·        Designing handouts and promotional materials for the Writing Center
·        Designing and presenting in-class or community writing workshops
·        Speaking to faculty and students about the Writing Center during in-class visits or promotional events
·        Attending staff meetings and professional development opportunities as provided
·        Assisting the Director with assessment and administrative duties when needed

Criteria for Graduate Assistant Writing Consultants:
·        Enrollment and good standing in an Augusta University graduate degree program during the time of employment
·        At least a Bachelor’s degree
·        At least a 3.0 GPA in current program
·        At least one year of teaching or tutoring experience at the college level or willingness to go through training
·        Demonstrated knowledge about theory and practice of teaching and writing or willingness to learn
·        At least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with your writing
·        A strong writing sample
·        Excellent interpersonal skills
·        A high level of professionalism
·        The ability to be a role model to less experienced staff
·        The ability to lead others and contribute to staff development

GAs work ten hours per week at the rate of $10/hour. They receive tuition remission through the graduate school.
