Responsibilities

  • The incumbent will serve as an economics research assistant. In this capacity, the incumbent assists with gathering, reviewing, and analyzing statistical and economic data. The incumbent assists senior staff with formulating clear statements of relevant problems/issues and developing a hypothesis or work plan for collecting relevant statistical data and other information. The incumbent assists in researching the availability and reliability of data sources, and in downloading and preparing data for analysis, which may include working with very large data sets. The incumbent aids senior economists by summarizing data as appropriate, by clearly presenting the data collected on charts, graphs, maps, and other data visualization methods using appropriate software tools and programs, and by assisting in drafting memoranda and research notes. The incumbent assists with managing electronic files related to its data collection activities and prepares administrative reports detailing changes and developments in various proceedings. Incumbent uses various automated systems and software (such as STATA, SAS, and Arc GIS, database, and project management software or similar tools) to collect, compile, organize, represent and otherwise manipulate data, including automating its tabulation, and to prepare reports on various data as requested. The incumbent performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must meet eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.  

  • GS-7 Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service or qualified education. For this position, specialized experience includes the following:

  • Assisting with collecting/analyzing economic data using computer software (e.g., STATA or SAS, ArcGIS, database and/or project management software; Programming languages such as Visual Basic, C++ or Python); Presenting data in different forms such as charts, graphs, or reports, or utilizing other visualization methods; Analyzing facts and information and summarizing this material for use in decision memorandums and orders.

  • OR

  • Have successfully completed one full year of graduate education in economics, business, statistics, finance, or similar field of study, transcripts required.
