Undergrad and Graduate Students to support Summer High School Engineering Programs (paid position with travel and housing provided)


High School Engineering Summer Program Instructors
 What to expect… 
  • Interact with a diverse population of high-aspiring scholars and fellow staff from around the US and abroad 
  • Travel by air or motor coach to  either Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA, or UC Berkeley in Berkeley, CA 
  • As residential positions, housing in residence halls, as well as most meals are provided.  
  • Anticipate being “on-call”/available 24/7, though working hours will typically be from approximately 7:30 am-10: 00 pm, with roughly 2.5 hours of breaks each day 
 
Curriculum Overview 
In this eight-day immersive program,  students will build new skills and understandings of key engineering concepts, then use their new skills and knowledge to design a solution to a challenge. The core program provides students with the opportunity to experience multi-facets of engineering, from civil to mechanical to electrical to chemical, while working toward solving some of the Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations.  Students will learn about the challenges and constraints countries face with respect to obtaining clean water, general infrastructure, and sustainability. They will work in teams to implement all phases of the design thinking process for a service-driven Capstone Project. 
Advisor   Role  
Advisor  Staff is responsible for providing the best experience possible for all scholars through the facilitation of all educational curricula. They work within a team of 20 program staff and are responsible for working directly with a group of 20-25 scholars. Employees must be able to interact with and supervise scholars and ensure their safety, as the number one priority. Advisors report to the  Education Lead.  
It is useful to think of the Advisor role in terms of the acronym CARE: Chaperone, Administrator, Role Model, and Educator. 
  • Chaperone: Accompany scholars to all group meetings and field excursions. Ensure scholars are following the code of conduct at all times. Account for scholars during group meetings, speaking events, site visits, excursions, and at room check. 
  • Administrator: Complete paperwork, distribute and collect materials from scholars, and follow the program schedule. 
  • Role Model: Set a positive and enthusiastic example for scholars for the duration of the program. Establish positive connections with each scholar. Model appropriate behavior, language, and enthusiasm. 
  • Educator: Implement all program curricula, facilitate engaging scholar-led discussions, generate intellectual curiosity, and ensure that all educational goals are met during each phase of the program. 
Responsibilities 
  • Create a safe and stimulating learning environment for all  students 
  • Prepare  students  for each day’s activities  
  • Effectively deliver 8 – 10 hours of curriculum according to lesson plans provided daily 
  • Serve as a positive leader, mentor, and role model for all program participants 
  • Be knowledgeable of all policies and procedures and assist in their enforcement 
  • Efficiently manage the safe transportation of  students  on-site and off-site 
  • Attend daily staff meetings 
  • Conduct regular attendance checks and a nightly room check to ensure that  students  are safe and accounted for 
  • Submit completed paperwork and program materials in a timely fashion  
  • Assist support staff with program logistics as needed ( i.e.  check-in on Arrival Day, unpacking supplies, loading and unloading supplies at program sites) 
  • Work closely, cooperatively, and amicably with all staff members  
  • Perform other duties as designated by the program leadership 
 
Health & Safety Responsibilities 
  • Clean and sanitize equipment and spaces 
  • Perform temperature checks 
  • Be around large groups 
  • Wear a face mask and any other PPE as required while performing all duties throughout your assigned workday  
  • Model best practices for staying healthy throughout the program 
  • Enforce health and safety guidelines among scholars and staff 
 
Qualifications 
  • Knowledge and experience within the field of Engineering  (either as a TA or GA) 
  • Ability to form quick connections with high school students 
  • Bachelor’s level education or current student 
  • Experience facilitating curriculum and managing a classroom  with students grades 9-12 
  • Strong logistical and organization skills 
  • Must be able to bend and lift boxes up to 50  lbs.  and walk long distances on campus 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and solve problems 
  • Maturity and professionalism 
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Strong leadership skills  
  • Ability to set expectations for and enforce appropriate student behavior

  • Compensation paid bi-weekly  in addition to  housing, meals during program sessions, and between program session travel  
 
Successful Candidates   
 
  • Are high energy, flexible, and  have the ability to  work extended days and hours   
  • Can reside at the program site   
  • Can complete a mandatory training program prior to working the first session 
  • Can pass a mandatory background check 
  • Are eligible to work in the United States
