Code Compliance Specialist

The Code Compliance Specialist is classified as a technical position within the City and operates within its own specific functional area (Code Enforcement) as a part of the Community Development Department. The person in this position serves as the City’s Code Enforcement Officer and uses technical knowledge and discretion in managing an active caseload as well as overseeing the implementation and updating of applicable regulations. The Code Compliance Specialist’s efforts are necessarily coordinated with other staff and external parties. The person filling this position will receive, investigate, research, and resolve citizen questions, complaints, violations, and issues relating to zoning, land use, signs, surface water, site development, and compliance with other related municipal codes.

The Code Compliance Specialist is expected to exercise considerable initiative to work independently in the field and is responsible for decisions requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with a variety of codes and ordinances. The Code Compliance Specialist routinely encounters members of the public with little or no prior knowledge of the requirements of the City code. The person in this position must exercise patience and attempt to gain cooperation from citizens in order to avoid adversarial situations.
