Animal Care Specilaist (Kennels)

REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Animal Care Specialist in the Kennel Section of Broward County's Animal Care and Adoption Division:

***The facility is open weekends and holidays and you will be required to work weekends and holidays.***
General Description
The Animal Care Specialist performs a variety of animal care work in the shelter environment in various location as needed. This class works under general supervision and adheres to established standard operating procedures for the handling, care and oversight of animals currently residing in the shelter environment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
No experience required.
 
Special Certifications and Licenses:
None.
 
Preferences:
Knowledge of general animal care/health principles and practices
Experience working in an animal shelter or adoption center
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Being a member of the kennel staff also requires you to work in extreme heat or cold while bending, squatting, lifting up to 80 pounds, etc with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Feeds and provides clean water for animals in order to maintain animal's health and general welfare.

Maintains well-being of animals in the shelter; reunites pets and owners, avoids needless overcrowding at shelters, and avoids potential cross contamination/spread of disease at shelter.

Cleans and disinfects dog runs and cat cages, feeds animals, scans and bands animals, laundry duties, disinfects areas and supplies for next day (washing bowls, and litter pans, stocking areas with food, newspapers and litter boxes, clean towels and bedding).

Cleans other shelter areas housing or temporary holding animals to ensure proper sanitation to reduce potential spread of disease at shelter.

Interacts with dogs and cats to apply both mental and physical enrichment.

Interacts with the public in a positive and customer centric manner (adoptions, rescues, owner surrenders, returns to owners, lost pets, fosters, and possible volunteers).

Educates the public on Broward County animal ordinance-related issues, along with programs such as rabies clinics, adoption events, and special programs.

Communicates the necessity of spaying/neutering pets, benefits of adoption, and conducts outreach activities for off-site animal events.

Assist with training volunteers and work alongside volunteers in a positive and collaborative manner.

Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Demands
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to disease/pathogens, dog and cat allergens, potentially aggressive animals and periods of mental stress.
