Position: Development and Communications Coordinator
Reports to: Executive Director

About MESA
Oregon MESA is working to close the opportunity and achievement gaps for students underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. MESA is an equity program hosted at the Portland State University-Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science; MESA equips underrepresented students with STEM, invention, and 21st-century skills.

Position Overview
The Development and Communications Coordinator supports resource development operations to achieve the goals of the annual development strategy. The Assistant supports the day-to-day responsibilities of donor cultivation and engagement, special events execution, communications, and administrative support. This position reports to the Executive Director and will support the outreach, marketing, and communications functions central to MESA’s efforts to elevate our visibility, share stories with donors, and engage new supporters in our work.

Responsibilities
  • Communications
  • Manage and optimize existing social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat and build MESA’s presence on new platforms such as LinkedIn
  • Write and edit press releases, social media content, website updates, newsletters, annual report, and other materials
  • Collect and compile data, student stories, and outcomes data for grant proposals, marketing materials, and annual report
  • Manage website and content using Concrete5
  • Photograph activities and manage organization’s image files
  • Create graphics and design materials using design software like Canva or InDesign
  • Seek out media opportunities and assist with coordination of staff taking part in media interviews
  • Provide support to staff members who conduct outreach and assist in creating and implementing MESA-wide communications strategy
  • Ensure quality and branding are maintained across all outreach items produced
  • Donor Cultivation and Administration
  • Process all aspects of the gift and donor acknowledgment process in an accurate and timely manner including writing, printing and sending thank you notes to donors
  • Maintain accurate and orderly records of all contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Generate mailing lists and manage mailings for special events, individual and corporate appeals
  • Assist in donor stewardship activities, donor thank you calls, and provide excellent customer service to all donors
  • Maintain deadlines calendar for donor reports, etc
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of donor site visits
  • Assist the Executive Director in the planning, development, and execution of  donor/partner engagement and fundraising events
  • Assist in the preparation of Board and Development meetings
  • Assist with other organizational and administrative projects, as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Passion for the MESA mission
  • Excellent organization and project management skills
  • Highly adaptable, efficient, self-motivated, and detail-oriented
  • Excellent oral, written, and visual communicator
  • Excellence in communicating professionally with diverse audiences
  • Proven ability to collaborate with teams, multi-task, set priorities, adapt to change, and solve problems in a dynamic, high-performing work environment
  • Proficient in social media and outreach tools (ex: Hootsuite, Facebook, Instagram, etc)
  • Strong eye for graphic design, color, and fonts.
  • Prior experience with visual design and software tools
  • Proficient in Google Drive, including Google Docs and Google Sheets
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Bachelor’s degree required or in-progress

Desired Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in customer service or communications role
  • Bilingual: Spanish (written and verbal)
  • Experience with website design (ex: Concrete5, Wordpress, etc)

Compensation and Benefits
  • Portland State University student employee position
  • $14/hour for 15-20 hours/week; Minimum 1-year commitment
