Research Support Specialist

Required Qualifications:  (As evidenced by an attached resume)

Bachelor's degree (equivalent) or higher with a concentration in biology or related field. Experience in a cell/molecular biology research lab setting.  Experience localizing proteins using immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence staining.  Experience with light and fluorescent microscopy and digital imaging.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree (equivalent) in a related field.  Competence embedding and sectioning tissues (paraffin, cryo, and/or vibratome).  Competence with confocal microscopy or similar.  Experience analyzing gene expression using in situ hybridization and/or quantitative RT-PCR.  Competence with mouse husbandry, euthanasia, and anesthesia procedures.

Brief Description of Duties:

Under direction of the PI, the Research Support Specialist will conduct research and support laboratory projects. Laboratory projects are focused on understanding how defects in glycosylation (cause by Pofut2 and B3glct mutations) lead to birth defects in brain, skeleton, and eye. The primary focus will be determining whether the mutations affect protein trafficking and/or alter extracellular matrix composition/properties during organ development. The successful incumbent must have strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail, and ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot experiments.  Experience successfully working as part of a team.  Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.  Meticulous record keeping.

• Conduct experiments to localize proteins in sectioned adult and embryonic tissues. Conduct experiments to localize and quantitate mRNA in wholemount or sectioned embryos and adult tissues.
• Compile and analyze scientific data/results from research. Write experimental reports for PI. Participate in weekly meetings with co-PI lab.
• Assist Lab Manager with mouse Husbandry and assist Lab Manager with lab organization as needed.
• Mentor Graduate and Undergraduate students/trainees in cell and molecular biology techniques.
• Other duties or projects as assigned.
