Student Photographer

Basic Function and Responsibility:

Assist the Communications and Marketing department with photography to be featured in communications materials. This position includes scheduling and managing photo shoots, completing media release forms with photo subjects, and post-shoot production work. This position must be skilled in photography, as well as editing and publishing (as documented by a portfolio or samples of work).

Job Duties: 

  • Coordinate photo shoots with students, professors and other campus affiliates as requested by Marketing and Communications
  • Cover all aspects of special events assigned by Marketing and Communications to ensure theevent is captured through quality photographs
  • Process and edits photos, keyword tag photos and upload into Lightroom
  • When not on assigned projects, be creative and take the lead to capture interesting, beautiful and fun images for general UM Foundation use.
  • Work with the Assistant Director of Digital Communications on special photo and video projects
  • Meet regularly with supervisor to review upcoming events, shot lists, scheduling, short-term and long-term projects

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skill with photography equipment, including various cameras, lenses, and lighting;

  • Ability to produce and edit quality photographs Adobe Creative Suite including Lightroom 5.4;

  • Dependable and reliable;

  • Excellent attention to detail;

  • Proficiency with operation of basic office equipment such as a personal computer and printer;

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications;

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team;

  • A clear understanding of the need for confidentiality with regard to sensitive information.

Physical Requirements:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Ability to speak, hear, sit, see, operate office equipment, travel locally, lift up to 20 lbs, be present in office, have reliable attendance, walk, stand, stoop, kneel, reaching, typing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Interest in acquiring hands-on experience with communications and marketing;

  • Skilled photographer (as documented by a portfolio or samples of work);

  • At least 10-15 hours of availability during the work week (Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm);

  • Current University of Montana student.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work-study funding;

  • Experience with video production (as documented by a portfolio or samples of work);

  • Major in related field, such as photo journalism or applicable programs of study;

  • Able to provide personal consumer grade photography equipment for use on the job;

  • Willing to work during evenings and weekends as needed;

  • Completion of relevant coursework.
