Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Homegrown Education and Outreach Internship 2018

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden’s mission is to inspire and educate all with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and promote human and environmental well-being through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse.

Homegrown is a Phipps program dedicated to increasing community access to fresh produce, promoting better food choices, and improving the overall health of families and children. We fulfill our goals by installing raised bed vegetable gardens at households in underserved neighborhoods, and by providing mentorship and resources.  The Homegrown Education and Outreach Intern will have the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of this program, focusing on outreach and education. He/she will represent Homegrown at various community events, assist with site visits prior to installation and follow-up garden check-ins, prepare materials for monthly garden classes, help with seed starting and seedling care, and assist with garden installations and other program duties as needed.

Current enrollment in an environmental science or education, food studies or related degree program, or equivalent experience required. Candidates must have at least one season’s experience in growing and maintaining a vegetable garden.  This paid internship is 32 hours per week, from May-August 2018.

TO APPLY: Submit a resume and cover letter detailing your experience as it relates to the position to hr@phipps.conservatory.org or Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, One Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Application deadline: March 15, 2018.
