Natural Resources Technician
General Statement of Duties
Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District has an internship opportunity available involving natural resource conservation. Primary projects include assisting with a forest management, assisting with agriculture programs, and educating local municipalities, landowners and youth. Other duties include assisting in laying out conservation best management practices in a variety of settings, participate in educational presentations, and tree and shrub plantings (depending on start date). Other duties may be assigned.
Typical Work Activities
Ø Assist landowners (county, towns, landowners) in developing forest management plans
Ø Mark and inventory timber products
Ø Farm visits to help determine conservation needs
Ø Data entry for various projects
Ø Assist with mapping
Ø Design, layout and install best management practices such as hydroseeding
Ø Attend training as required
Ø Present at local educational events as needed
Ø Compile and present reports on activities
Ø Perform other duties as assigned
Full Performance and Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
Ø Knowledge of forest inventory methods
Ø Knowledge of planning and the development of natural resource management plans
Ø Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ø Ability to document work and prepare reports
Ø Familiar with computers and programs such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and ArcGIS
Ø Good physical condition to meet position demands
Ø Ability to work in various weather conditions
Ø Good verbal and interpersonal skills to work closely with other staff to meet deadlines
Ø A valid NYS State Drivers License

A. Currently enrolled or graduated from an accredited college program in forestry, natural resource management, agriculture or related field.
