Job Shadow in Medical Research & Brain Imaging, in Phoenix
Founded in 2006 and located in Phoenix, AZ, the
Banner Alzheimer's Institute is a world-leading research and clinical center
dedicated to serving patients and their families who are impacted by
Alzheimer's disease. In addition to comprehensive clinical care,
Banner Alzheimer's Institute
offers
clinical trials, caregiver education, and community engagement events. Banner Alzheimer's Institute
is
also home to some of the first therapeutic Alzheimer's prevention trials that
are currently being conducted world-wide.
The job shadow day will begin in the Computational and Image Analysis Laboratory where several lines of research using brain imaging and advanced statistical techniques are carried out. The tour will then proceed to the clinical imaging area where MRI and PET scans are conducted. Students will then be taken to the clinic area where they will meet and interact with physicians and research coordinators. After the tour, students will return to Computational and Image Analysis Laboratory where they will see first-hand how brain images are processed and analyzed. There will also be opportunities to sit in on meetings between scientists and analysts who are collaborating on a variety of on-going research studies. The morning will conclude with lunch at a local restaurant. The afternoon will consist of a series of short lectures given by Banner Alzheimer's Institute clinicians and scientists on the various aspects of clinical care and research they are involved in. The shadow experience would last between 5 and 7 hours and is available Monday 3/5 through Thursday 3/8.
This opportunity is best-suited for students majoring in psychology, biology, biomedical engineering, and other related disciplines. In particular, students who are considering graduate school or medical school would also benefit greatly from this opportunity. The job shadow host is a fellow UA alum who earned his BS in Psychology in 2003.
This is part of the UA Job Shadow Program (JSP). The JSP is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to a career field and be mentored by actual professionals. Unless otherwise noted, the experience is one day long and will take place sometime during Spring Break, March 5-9.
