The Athens Regional Library System, Georgia's Public Library of the Year, has an opening for a full-time Library Assistant: Technology Specialist position with the Madison County Library. The System will hire an individual committed to offering the very best library service to the community, an employee who consistently looks for ways to excel and improve. Salary: $25,500 annually with benefits
Hours: 40 hours per week; morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours are required
Bilingual Skills (English-Spanish) are preferred, but not required.

Purpose and Scope
This position works as part of the library’s team to provide front-line library and computer services to patrons and is responsible for library information technology operations in Madison County. This position requires dependability, tact, knowledge of library policies and procedures, and the ability to work as part of a team. The position requires mastering complex procedural and computer-related tasks and familiarity with basic tasks of local area and cloud-based network administration and security. The person in this position works to plan and present technology training opportunities for library patrons and staff. This position reports directly to the Madison County Library Branch Manager.

Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required, with college degree or computer support specialist certification and/or training strongly preferred. At least three years’ experience working in computer-related field and at least one year’s experience working with the public is required, with library experience preferred. Or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. Must possess (or be able to acquire) and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license and clean driving record. Bilingual Skills (English-Spanish) are preferred, but not required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and job assignments may change in the future, including night and weekend work assignments.
- Provides outstanding direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their library questions and activities, and information and technology needs.
- Monitors and maintains all local technology operations and security associated with the library’s computer systems and network, according to established ARLS guidelines and protocols and under guidance of ARLS Computer Operations department. Assists the computer team with installation of new equipment and software, regular maintenance, upgrades, and repairs.
- Subject to Branch Manager’s guidance and approval, designs, promotes, and presents introductory information technology classes and tutorials for the public on a variety of computer skills and other topics. May be required to provide such sessions at the library or in other locations within the county.
- Researches and recommends short- and long-term information technology goals for the library, including equipment needs.
- Keeps current with professional literature on information technology advances for general public and library applications. Participates in appropriate and approved professional conferences, webinars, and continuing education opportunities.
- Maintains and submits required statistics and reports.
- Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement and computer acceptable use policies.
- Monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
- Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including the following: organizing and re-shelving materials; accepting fees and fines; routing holds, loans, and information; materials processing; basic facility maintenance; meeting room use; performing basic office duties including answering telephones.
Supervisory and Management Responsibilities
- In the absence of the Branch Manager, directs day-to-day operations of the library, being responsible for opening, closing, and security of the library.
- May train and oversee library volunteers as assigned.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages as well as to co-workers.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of all computer applications and programs supported by the Madison County Library. Ability to assist patrons with computer applications and the library’s automated circulation system.
- Extensive knowledge of personal computers and other electronic information devices and ability to troubleshoot and maintain a broad range of technology.
- Familiarity with popular web applications and library materials.
- Ability to prepare training plans and materials and skill in training presentation.
- Knowledge of general library principles and philosophy and application of ARLS and PINES policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
- Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff.
- Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
- Ability to answer questions and explain procedures and policies.
- Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
- Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment. Physical ability to regularly and routinely operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including computer with keyboard and scanner, telephone, copy machine, and audio/visual equipment.
- Physical ability to move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Medium Work.
