Graduate Assistant

Job Description

The Writing Center is hiring Graduate Assistants to support Writing Center operations and writing program initiatives in the College of Humanities & the Arts. GAs will work the Writing Center front desk, assist with a wide range of Writing Center operations, and provide support for writing program initiatives coming out of the College. The pay rate for these positions is $17.00/hour.  

Graduate Assistants will be responsible for the following Writing Center job duties: 

  • work days and/or evenings in a high-traffic environment at the Writing Center front desk.
  • maintain a welcoming, professional environment in the Writing Center.
  • perform regular office functions (e.g., open and/or close the Center; respond to inquiries in person, by email, and by phone; schedule appointments, prepare meeting and workshop materials).
  • manage tutoring appointments online and ensure that tutoring policies and procedures are followed.
  • participate in regular staff meetings.
  • assist in maintaining a clean, safe environment.
  • keep the director apprised of any possible issues or student concerns.
  • provide support to the office coordinator in filing, creating schedules, and organizing hiring paperwork.
  • perform other duties as assigned by the Writing Center Director. 

Depending on ability and experience, some GAs will work closely with faculty and administrators to support our First-Year Writing and Writing Across the Curriculum programs. Duties in this area include 

  • helping the associate dean and the directors of academic writing programs develop and implement program materials and communications.
  • maintaining online calendars and databases of program activities and communications.
  • responding promptly and accurately to program-related questions and requests for information.

General Qualifications

To be a Writing Center Graduate Assistant, you must be a currently enrolled student at SJSU with a "clear" academic standing. In addition, you must meet the following requirements: 

  • a minimum overall GPA of 3.2
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • strong writing and research skills
  • competence in using Microsoft suite, including Excel and Word
  • ability to use in-house and SJSU databases to enter and retrieve information and to produce reports
