Youth Programs Assistant Crew Leader
Location: Office in Steamboat Springs, CO - Crews will serve in Routt County and NW Colorado
Crews:
Yampa Valley Service Learning Crew (SLC) – participants age 11-13
Yampa Valley Community Development Crew (CDC) – participants age 14-15
Regional Service Crew (RSC) – participants age 16-18
Regional SLC & CDC – participants ages 10-16 (various communities across NW Colorado)
Session Dates:
SLC tentative program dates May 23th – August 18th
CDC tentative program dates May 11th – August 18th
RSC tentative program dates May 11th – August 18th
YEP tentative program dates May 11th – August 18th
All Youth Programs OFF June 30th – 4th
Youth Programs Rendezvous/Mid-season training July 5th -8th
Stipend: Weekly living stipend of $433

CDC & RSC - $1493 AmeriCorps Education Award (450 hour term)

Plus:
Food while camping with crew, transportation, opportunity to receive a
Wilderness First Aid Certification, additional recreational and educational

Duties and Responsibilities:
Mentor and serve alongside of a crew of 8-16 crew members (depending on which crew) in all day-to- day activities, on the project site and around camp
Support the physical and emotional wellbeing of the crew members
Participate in RMYC Crew Leader training, field training and mid-session training (Youth Programs
Rendezvous) and post session de-rigging/inventory and debriefing
Assist with transporting crew safely in RMYC’s 12/15-passenger vans or other vehicles
Assist with daily and weekly documentation of crew service and activities, time spent serving, assist with
mid-season and end of season evaluations, etc.
Assist with overseeing base camp operations including camp set-up, vehicle maintenance, camp hygiene and all other elements involved with adherence to RMYC policy
Assist Crew Leader with project logistics
Report regularly to Crew Leader, Field Coordinator and Program Manager
Co-facilitate Seed Curriculum/Evidence Based curriculum - required educational activities
Co-facilitate weekly or weekend recreational opportunities in conjunction with daily schedule
Perform duties expected of any corps member including trail/service, meal preparation,
cleanup/setup, and other day-to- day duties
Conduct routine vehicle/driver, camp and project safety audits to uphold the RMYC risk management
program
Adhere to and enforce rules and regulations as specified in the RMYC Employee Guidelines Handbook
Materials & Equipment:
Each Leader is responsible for their service and personal clothes, leather boots, gloves, and personal camping equipment. RMYC will provide staff with crew T-shirts to be worn as a uniform. The crew
leaders should role model preparedness every day by keeping a daypack with various essentials including but not limited to change of clothes, water, sunblock, hat, sunglasses, and program supplies as needed. RMYC will coordinate with project partners to ensure that basic tools needed for the program are provided for each project. Group food for camping, group camping gear and other supplies will be provided by RMYC. When not camping food is not provided.
Qualifications:
We are seeking staff who can balance creating a fun/enjoyable experience for the youth while also maintaining a structured and supportive program to meet the program goals. A positive attitude, a flexible
mindset, and an ability to adapt to daily schedule changes are key attributes of a successful leader. Crew leaderswill have significant experience and leadership qualities including:
Must be 21 years old – insurance policy for driving
Leadership experience with youth age 10-18 is preferred
Conservation/Youth Corps experience preferred
Ability to camp and live in a variety of weather conditions
Physical ability to be on your feet and serve outside for 8-10 hours a day
Familiarity with basic conservation and camping skills, including leave no trace practices
Strong organizational skills, ability to live independently but also collectively, self-motivated, confident,
flexible, and open-minded
Ability to clearly and effectively communicate in a written and oral manner
Appropriate risk management skills
Wilderness First Aid (WFA) preferred
Good driving record (Crew leaders must provide driving reports from DMV)
High School diploma or GED required – relevant Bachelor’s Degree preferred
Pre-service background screening required including FBI background check
Must be able to provide proof of eligibility in the United States

Yampa Valley Service Learning Crew (SLC)
Participants are 11-13 year olds and volunteer their time for community service hours on a crew
of 3 leaders and 16 participants
Five 2-week sessions, Monday - Thursday, 8am-4pm with one overnight camping in Routt County
(leaders work 7:45am-4:30pm)
SLC enhances the sense of belonging and connectedness of youth to their communities through
meaningful outdoor-based service projects, education, and group recreation activities
The education component of SLC consists of job readiness, leadership skills, life skills training,
environmental education, and civic and social responsibility
Yampa Valley Community Development Crew (CDC)
Participants are 14-15 year olds and paid an hourly wage on a crew of 2 leaders and 10
participants
Five 2-week sessions, first week Monday - Friday 8am-4pm, second week camping 24/7 in Routt
or surrounding county (leaders work 7:45am-4:30pm on non-camping week)
CDC provides leadership and mentoring for youth and is considered an entry-level youth corps
program
The education component of CDC consists of job readiness, leadership skills, life skills training,
environmental education, ATOD and civic and social responsibility
Regional Service Crew (RSC)
Participants are 16-18 year olds and paid an hourly wage on a crew of 2 leaders and 8-10
participants
2-4 week sessions, camping 24/7 in NW Colorado
RSC provides young adults with the opportunities and tools to build strong bonds to community,
increase academic success, and live a healthy and productive adulthood
The education component of RSC consists of career development, leadership skills, healthy
lifestyles, environmental education, personal growth, ATOD, and civic and social responsibility
Youth Expansion Program Crew (SLC, CDC)
Refer to the format of SLC and CDC
Five 2-week sessions in various communities in NW CO
You will be leading a mix of SLC and CDC sessions with local kids in each community
Camping locations will be provided in each community, this position location will vary from
session to session.
