The Founding Documents & Their Legacy
About the project:
The Founding Documents & Their Legacy: The College of Charleston and K-12 Educators in Partnership is a three-year initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education and designed to strengthen the teaching of American history, civics, and government in Charleston-area K-12 schools by building a sustained, evidence-based professional development partnership between CofC faculty and practicing educators across elementary, middle, and secondary grade levels. The project unfolds in phases. Year 1 is devoted to intensive faculty development: CofC faculty who teach Founding Documents courses and Civility Initiative programs will be trained to design and facilitate professional development experiences for K-12 educators, in accordance with South Carolina state teaching standards, ensuring the later summer institutes are pedagogically sophisticated and grade-level appropriate. Years 2+3 will see weeklong summer institutes, serving cohorts of 10 elementary, 10 middle grades, and 10 secondary educators for a total of 30 K-12 teachers per year. Each institute is followed by a year of classroom follow-up support and assessment.
