GovAI DC Summer Fellowship 2027
The DC Summer Fellowship is a three-month, bipartisan opportunity designed to accelerate or launch impactful careers in American AI governance and policy. Fellows join GovAI in Washington, DC from 7 June to 27 August 2027 to conduct a research project of their choice under expert guidance, while deepening their understanding of the field, building a network of experts, and developing their skills and professional profile.
About GovAI
The Centre for the Governance of AI (GovAI) was founded at Yale University in 2016 and now operates independently as a 501(c)(3) think tank. Our mission is to help decision-makers navigate the transition to a world with advanced AI. Our alumni, affiliates and staff have worked at the National Security Council, OSTP, the Senate, leading think tanks (CSIS, CSET, CNAS, RAND, the Heritage Foundation, FAI), frontier AI companies, and universities including Yale, Stanford and MIT.
About the fellowship
Each fellow is paired with a supervisor from the GovAI team or network. Fellows spend the first two weeks exploring the AI policy landscape before settling on a research proposal. Outputs could include a report, white paper, journal article, op-ed or blog post aimed at an AI policy audience. Alongside their research, fellows take part in Q&A sessions with AI policy experts, hands-on workshops and seminars, work-in-progress meetings and social events, and are encouraged to discuss follow-on career opportunities with our team and network.
Who we're looking for
We welcome a wide range of applicants, from early-career individuals (including promising undergraduates) to experienced professionals moving into tech policy from adjacent fields. Relevant backgrounds include public policy, political science, engineering, computer science, economics, biosecurity, cybersecurity, China studies and risk management, but there are no strict degree requirements. We're committed to intellectual diversity and bipartisanship, and look for:
- Quality of work: clearly written, insightful and even-handed research or policy advice
- Relevant expertise: skills or knowledge useful for work on AI policy
- Judgment: the ability to prioritise between research or policy directions
- Team fit: openness to feedback, intellectual honesty and rigour, and a serious interest in contributing to AI governance
Pay, duration and location
Fellows receive a stipend of $24,500 for the three months, plus support for travel to DC. This is a full-time, in-person role; we provide weekday lunches and a desk in our DC office. Part-time arrangements may be possible for DC-based professionals working on relevant topics. Only candidates with the right to work in the US are eligible; we cannot sponsor visas for this fellowship.
How to apply
Applications close at 11:59 pm EST on Sunday 22 November 2026. The process has three stages: a written application and short (about 20-minute) automated reasoning assessment; a paid, remote work test in January; and a remote interview and reference checks in February. Final decisions are expected in March.
