ABOUT MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK FELLOWSHIP IN NEW YORK CITY
The FAO Schwarz Fellowship is an intensive, transformative two-year experience in the world of social impact. Fellows work at leading nonprofit organizations in Boston, New York City and Philadelphia. Each organization is deeply valued in their communities and has a strong record of delivering high-quality services that address critical issues of social inequity and producing consistent results. The Fellowship is a two-year commitment that pays $55,000 in year one (includes $2,000 start of Fellowship bonus) and $60,000 in year two (includes $3,000 end of Fellowship bonus).
DIRECT SERVICE
The FAO Schwarz Fellow will be a vital member of the Education Department, working with museum staff and visitors to provide content-rich and interactive learning experiences directly to students and educators.
The Fellow will:
- Lead on-site school year and summer field trips (approximately four days per week) for grades K-12 focused on the Museum’s special and ongoing exhibitions and collections.
- Observe and participate in staff workshops, individual coaching, and professional development opportunities to learn content, pedagogy, and techniques of inquiry, visual literacy, hands-on learning, and discussion.
STRATEGIC PROJECT
The FAO Schwarz Fellow will be a critical partner to MCNY’s Manager of Professional Learning in the development and facilitation of new and revised Professional Learning programs and the creation of classroom resources (e.g., in-classroom lesson plans and museum resource guides) for educators and teachers.
In addition, the Fellow will help assess the Museum’s Professional Learning programs holistically, with an eye towards maintaining program consistency and growing the Professional Learning Community.
The Fellow will:
- Co-develop and facilitate workshops, lectures, and panel discussions for MCNY’s Professional Learning programs, including background and pedagogical research, curriculum development, timeline management, and guided tours of MCNY’s galleries and collection.
- Create educator resources including lesson plans, resource guides, and other materials that support teacher engagement and experiences, both in the museum and the classroom, that foster curiosity, creativity, and meaningful cross-disciplinary connections.
- Partner with the Museum’s Marketing and Communications Department on the development of marketing and outreach plans for Professional Learning programs.
- In Year 1, the Fellow will begin developing educator resources for the classroom and building direct relationships with teachers, which will inform the Professional Learning program they design in Year 2.
- In Year 2, the Fellow will have the opportunity to fully develop and lead at least one educator Professional Learning program.
TYPICAL WORK SCHEDULE
The Fellow will work Monday through Friday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and some Saturdays, with four days at the Museum and one day remote.
