Substitute Reading & Club Coach
Substitute Reading & Club Coach
J3 Foundation | Compton, CA
Part-time, as-needed substitute | $30.00 to $33.00 per hour depending on job duties
Position Overview
J3 Foundation is seeking part-time, as-needed Substitute Coaches to cover for our regular coaches when they are absent, so students never miss a session. Substitutes work in both of J3's literacy programs:
- Building Bold Readers (school day): Small-group reading intervention with 4th-grade students on school campuses during regular school hours, using the SIPPS curriculum.
- Cozy Reading Club (after school): Reading clubs where students build confidence and a love of books, in small groups of about 7 students per adult.
When assigned, you step into an existing coach's schedule and student groups, follow the site's established routines, and keep students' learning moving forward. Assignments may come with short notice and may be at different partner schools.
You don't need to be a classroom teacher or a reading specialist. If you love working with kids, bring warmth and energy to learning, and can step into a new group with confidence, this role was made for you.
What You'll Do
- Cover school-day reading intervention sessions, teaching SIPPS lessons from the point where the regular coach left off.
- Cover after-school club sessions, leading reading activities alongside the other coaches on site.
- Follow each site's schedule, routines, and expectations for student behavior.
- Check in with school staff and the J3 site lead on arrival, and report to the site's Regional Program Manager (school day) or Club Lead (after school).
- Take attendance and leave brief session notes so the regular coach can continue without a gap.
Why You'll Love This Role
- Flexibility to accept assignments that fit around college, graduate school, another job, or family responsibilities.
- Your choice of school-day assignments, after-school assignments, or both.
- Paid training, plus the curriculum and materials you need, so you arrive ready to lead.
- Hands-on experience in literacy intervention, youth development, restorative practices, and facilitation.

Assignments may be offered on short notice. Substitutes may accept or decline offered assignments based on their availability.
