Welding Engineer – Robotic Welding Applications

About us

Productive Robotics designs and builds OB7 collaborative robots in California. Machine shops and metal fabricators use our robots to automate welding and machine tending. Many of these shops have never automated before. We're a small team, so your work reaches the product and our customers quickly.

The role

You'll be the welding expert inside a robotics company. You'll develop and prove out robotic welding applications, turn customer parts into dialed-in weld programs, and help make OB7 the easiest welding cobot for a fab shop to adopt. You'll work across engineering, product, and sales, and you'll spend time on our weld cell and in front of customers.

What you'll do

  • Develop and optimize robotic MIG (GMAW) and laser welding (LBW) processes on OB7 cobots
  • Run sample welds on customer parts, then document parameters, results, and cycle times
  • Write weld procedures, application notes, and setup guides for customers and our team
  • Test and integrate torches, power sources, wire feeders, and fixturing from partner suppliers
  • Help engineering improve welding software features based on real shop-floor feedback
  • Support customer demos, installations, and troubleshooting, on-site or remote
  • Represent our welding expertise at trade shows and customer visits

What we're looking for

  • BS in Welding Engineering Technology, Welding Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Hands-on welding skills in MIG and/or laser welding, from coursework, a job, or a shop
  • Understanding of weld metallurgy, joint design, and weld quality and inspection
  • Comfort with technical writing and explaining things clearly to shop owners and operators
  • Curiosity about robotics and automation. Prior robot programming is a plus, not a requirement.

Nice to have

  • AWS certifications (e.g., CWI coursework, welder qualifications)
  • Robotic welding experience from an internship, competition, or lab
  • Familiarity with welding codes (AWS D1.1 or similar)

Why join us

  • Build expertise at the intersection of welding and robotics, a growing and under-served field
  • Real responsibility from day one on a small, fast-moving team, with tremendous potential for professional growth
  • Work on the Central Coast in Carpinteria, between Santa Barbara and Ventura

Compensation and benefits

  • $80,000–$100,000/year depending on experience
  • Multiple health care plan choices
  • 401(k)
  • Paid vacation, paid sick leave, and paid holidays
  • Paid educational support for degree programs or specialized training
  • Relocation assistance

To apply: Submit your resume through Handshake. Optional: include photos of welds or projects you're proud of.
