Project Creative Director — Freelance

John Kind Studios LLC | Remote | Project-based contract assignments

ABOUT JKS

John Kind Studios is a Boston-rooted creative production and strategic services company serving nonprofits, institutions, community organizations, artists and businesses. We connect strategy, storytelling and production to help organizations build visibility, trust and support.

Our mission: Make what needs to happen, happen.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking freelance Project Creative Directors to translate approved client objectives into coherent creative work and guide collaborators through execution.

This is a project-specific creative leadership role. You will establish direction, communicate useful feedback and protect the consistency and quality of assigned work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Interpret the approved brief, audience and intended outcome.
• Establish the project’s story, tone, visual or sonic direction and quality standard.
• Prepare or guide treatments, references and creative priorities.
• Align assigned collaborators around a clear creative approach.
• Review work in progress and consolidate actionable feedback.
• Provide internal creative approval within the approved brief.
• Flag creative risks and scope concerns early.
• Preserve references, source files, approvals and creative decisions in designated systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A portfolio demonstrating strong creative judgment and storytelling.
• Experience guiding collaborators or directing a substantial creative project.
• Ability to explain creative decisions in relation to audience and purpose.
• Clear feedback, dependable communication and respect for budgets and deadlines.
• Identify your strongest disciplines, such as film, design, photography, writing, audio or multidisciplinary campaigns.

AUTHORITY

Creative approval operates within the accepted brief. Changes to client commitments, budgets, staffing, licensing or scope require JKS approval.

COMPENSATION AND ASSIGNMENTS

Standard Creative Direction assignments pay 8% of eligible Collected Service Revenue.

A separately designated Strategy-Led assignment pays 35% only when the accepted Project Snapshot expressly assigns primary responsibility for originating and leading the core creative strategy. The rates are alternatives and are not added together. The standard 8% rate applies unless Strategy-Led terms are expressly approved.

Eligible revenue is qualifying cleared client payment for JKS professional services, subject to agreement exclusions such as taxes, refunds, chargebacks and pass-through costs.

Production, editing, design, writing, composing or other execution services require separately approved scope and fees.

This is a project-based independent contractor opportunity with no guaranteed assignments, hours, salary or employee benefits.

LOCATION AND AVAILABILITY

Remote creative coordination. Any onsite direction or travel must be identified and accepted separately.

HOW TO APPLY

Apply through Handshake with your résumé, portfolio link and a short cover letter addressing:

Share two relevant projects and explain your personal creative contribution.

How do you respond when client feedback conflicts with the creative approach?

What is your location, time zone and dependable weekday availability in Eastern Time?

Confirm your understanding of the project-based contractor arrangement and assignment-specific compensation.

Existing portfolio work only; no unpaid concepts or speculative client work are requested.

Selected applicants will receive an invitation to schedule a conversation with John Kind.
